How the 3DS influenced my 3D TV purchase

I would say I’m a little more experimental than the average “hardcore” gamer because I’ll buy any accessory that looks to enhance or change my gaming experience, even if the effect is minor. I bought the PlayStation 2’s EyeToy for the sole purpose of putting my likeness in Tony Hawk’s Underground 2; I got Logitech’s Driving Force Pro to play Gran Turismo games with as life-like an experience as possible; I also had an Activator to pretend-kick-ass in Eternal Champions for the Sega Genesis.

Gamers: the new sex symbol

Well, it looks like 2011 is the year gamers will finally overtake jocks as the type of guy who moistens the panties of women everywhere. A survey conducted jointly by the female centric website Yahoo Shine and dude-bro magazine Maxim found that 39 percent of women said it’s a turn-on when a guy lists “video games” as a personal interest. Notice, it doesn’t say playing games is just okay or tolerated – it’s an effing turn-on!

Beginners Guide to Getting the Most from Your Gaming Set-Up

Many of my friends (including myself) have invested a lot of money in their gaming set-ups. All of them have their preferred console hooked up to an HDTV and a 5.1 surround sound system but I was surprised to see that none of them calibrated any of the components. I don’t know how they can endure playing games and watching movies at factory or showroom settings. If you’re going to spend that kind of money you should make sure it’s working at its fullest potential. And with the recent release of Halo Reach I thought many could benefit from some of the minor tweaks in this very simple set-up guide that will improve the picture on your television and the sound from your surround sound system.

Duke Nukem Forever in My Heart

My relationship with Duke Nukem Forever is similar to that of a batter wife; he glimmers of hope with the tease of a screenshot or trailer, only to get punched in the gut by constantly placing on Top 10 Vaporware lists. He was so good to me in the past. Surely, he will treat me right because he sees how dedicated I am to him. I’ll remain right here by his side – waiting.

Life without Miyamoto

Video games are relatively young in the entertainment world. It seems like in only the past several years it has finally become accepted by the mainstream masses as more than just for children – entire families are playing together.  Being so young, this industry has yet to experience the loss of one of its greats while in their prime. Imagine how music could have evolved if the plane crash that took the lives of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper never happened.

Best Xbox 360 Racer: Ridge Racer 6

Yes, you read correctly — Ridge Racer friggin’ 6. I’m sure most would say Burnout, Forza, or Project Gotham but this out-of-print, out-of-stock racer is the cat’s pajamas. You best believe it. It’s my go-to game whenever I’m bored, had a few drinks, or just want to get a dose of nostalgia.

Best Xbox 360 Shooter: Red Dead Redemption

I do not like westerns whatsoever. I love the Back to the Future movies but hated the third in the series because it was set in the old west.  I grew up with my dad watching spaghetti  westerns on the weekends and never once did I show an interest in watching them.  For whatever reason the wild west was never an interest of mine so I was not expecting much from Red Dead Redemption. The only reason I borrowed it from a friend was because so many people were talking about it I thought I had to at least give it a try.

Does Racism Exist in Video Games

I, for one, am tired of hearing about racism — especially in video games. The excessive use of the race card bothers me to no end. Given the United States’ history, racism is understandably a very sensitive subject. What is not, however, is the need for some people to point out racism where it simply does not exist. I mostly hear about it in podcasts but for the purpose of this article I would like to focus on one incident.

Taking the Plunge: Why Bitmob

Video games have had a huge impact on my life. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the industry but didn’t know in what respect. Making games would be cool but I thought I would enjoy covering them even more. Playing all sorts of games before they were released and being privy to information no one else had was intriguing.

Who is Cart Racing King?

For a racing fan the past several years have been mostly disappointing. The genre has been stuck in a cycle of progressing only in realism and ignoring why a game like Mario Kart is so popular: People want to see wrecks. It’s the reason NASCAR is beloved by so many farmer tanned, musical jug playing southerners. So combining the semi-realism of Project Gotham Racing with the weapons of Wipeout becomes a recipe for success. Enter Blur, Split Second, and ModNation Racers. Each takes a new approach to the popular cart-racing genre.
