While the iOS app store has well over 800,000 active apps and Google Play sports more than 600,000, the Amazon app store has only about 75,000.

The global app economy will reach $25 billion this year, according to new data from ABI Research. Thirty-five percent of that, or $8.8 billion, will be tablet apps, and 65 percent -- 16.4 billion -- will be smartphone apps.

Apple's app store is still bigger than Google Play and still earns much more revenue. But while Google's app store grew revenue 200 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, Apple's iOS app store grew only 20 percent.
