DEMO: BitGravity launches high-definition video streaming service

BitGravity is launching a digital video service today that allows its customers to stream high-definition videos over the Internet.

The BG Live service can stream live events in 1080p or 720p resolution (the same quality as high-end TV sets), according to the company’s announcement at DEMO 2009 today.

DigiMeld has launched a new technology aimed at making high-definition videos play more smoothly over the web.

The New York-based company has also raised $2 million in a first round of funding from angel investors. The company tested its “grid streaming” technology with NASA’s TV network.

BitGravity scores a big partnership and funding, calling an end to era of small independent CDNs

Tata Communications, a large Indian telecom carrier, has tapped Silicon Valley company BitGravity to provide content delivery network (CDN) services. Tata, of Mumbai, has also invested $11.5 million in covertible debt in the company.

BitGravity is an upstart challenging large companies like Akamai and Limelight, which deliver much of the Internet’s information. The partnership is important because Tata owns one of the world’s largest tier 1 (meaning it’s connected worldwide) networks on the planet.
