Chat through your TV with Cliqset, Boxee

Cliqset, a social content-sharing startup, has launched a partnership with Boxee to let users chat with friends on their TVs. The Gainesville, Fla.-based startup also launched a desktop client for its content sharing site, which resembles a cross between FriendFeed and Twitter. Cliqset pulls in data from about 70 social networks to let you know what your friends are doing across the web, but it doesn’t have the same strict 140-character limits that Twitter enforces.

Boxee raises $6M more to bring web content to your living room

Boxee, a company that has won ardent fans of its software for viewing online video and web content on your TV, has raised $6 million in a second round of funding.

The New York startup raised $4 million at the end of 2008, so it seems awfully soon to be bringing on more cash. Founder and chief executive Avner Ronen says raising a new round seemed like a good way to help Boxee build on its… Continue Reading

Boxee adds Pandora and makes its browser more Firefox-like for Hulu

Boxee, the streaming content startup, continues to push updates out at a brisk pace. Tonight, at its meetup in New York City, it’s announcing a few new features, one of which should help bring back Hulu support.

The marquee name being added to Boxee is Pandora, the online music streaming and recommendation engine. Fans of Pandora will now be able to listen to their favorite stations and make new ones right from within the application. This… Continue Reading

Will the Wii jump into the TV set-top box game?

Will the Wii jump into the TV set-top box game?

In an interview with Variety magazine, Lionsgate president Curt Marvis let slip that the Wii presents a major opportunity for Hollywood studios to distribute movies and television shows — and that this might be a reality before the year is out. While it isn’t written in stone, someone of Marvis’ stature probably isn’t just blowing smoke.

There are other indications a Hollywood-Wii deal might be in the works: Nintendo has already started developing a video-on-demand service… Continue Reading

The empire strikes back: Hulu blocks RSS access for Boxee

The empire strikes back: Hulu blocks RSS access for Boxee

Well, that didn’t last long. This morning, Boxee, a company that offers a way to bring online video to your TV, brought back Hulu content to its users.

It did so by way of a workaround, using public RSS feeds. Hulu has already struck back, blocking Boxee’s access to those feeds. Game on, says Boxee in a post on this latest move.

While it was pretty ridiculous before that the big media companies behind Hulu forced the… Continue Reading

Boxee and Hulu can’t reach an agreement, so Boxee creates a workaround (and launches an app store)

Boxee and Hulu can’t reach an agreement, so Boxee creates a workaround (and launches an app store)

When Boxee was forced to pull Hulu support a few weeks ago, users were outraged. And rightfully so. It’s not like Boxee, a software media center startup, was blocking the advertisements Hulu was showing, it was really just another way to view the content, almost like another browser. But the powers that be behind Hulu — that is, the big media companies that product the content — forced Hulu to shutdown the pipeline of content… Continue Reading

ZillionTV takes a new approach to the set-top box

ZillionTV takes a new approach to the set-top box

ZillionTV, yet another company serving on-demand internet video to television sets, has unveiled its set-top box to a largely unenthused audience. With Apple TV, Roku, Vudu, 2Wire, Boxee and more already battling it out, it seems doubtful that a player so late to the game will survive. But ZillionTV is taking a different tack that could either help it cut through the competition — or completely tank.

Considering that it’s led by Mitch Berman, veteran executive… Continue Reading

Boxee fanatics, chill out. The service works with the Apple TV 2.3.1 update

Boxee fanatics, chill out. The service works with the Apple TV 2.3.1 update

Apple sent out an update to the Apple TV last night, updating the box’s software to 2.3.1. No one really seems to be clear about what this update actually did (a network test, better iPhone remote performance?), but everyone is freaking out because as usual, the new software axed Boxee support. But really, it didn’t.

Boxee sent out an email today notifying users that Boxee will work just fine with 2.3.1. You simply need to reinstall… Continue Reading

Hulu channels Michael Corleone, Boxee support also whacked

Hulu, it seems, is tying up some loose ends.

Earlier today, it was revealed that the online streaming service had pulled its content off of CBS-owned TV.com — but that’s not all. It has also requested its content be removed from the media center software startup Boxee, an email from the company says. There’s the big media we all love to hate.

Hulu, which is backed by both NBC and Fox, offers many of the hit shows… Continue Reading

Boxee now lets you get “Lost” in ABC content

The new season of ABC’s hit show Lost premiered last night. Some people (me, for example) were busy and missed it. I was all set to buy the season pass on iTunes — but it’s $50 (in HD). I’d rather watch it for free, streaming at ABC.com, but that leaves me chained to my desk. Or it did until today, because media-center startup Boxee just added ABC support.

The addition expands an already impressive roster of… Continue Reading

Boxee adds Netflix support, but not for the Apple TV…yet

As set-top boxes that stream content over the internet to your TV become more popular, certain elements are starting to stand out to differentiate the best ones. Recently, the most popular of these elements is Netflix support. Roku has it, TiVo has it, some Blu-ray players have it and now even the Xbox 360 has it. So it makes sense that Boxee, the digital interface software company that hopes to land deals to get on… Continue Reading

Boxee raises funding as it goes after content, your living room

I need to install Boxee. I’ve been putting it off, but it needs to happen — like tomorrow. You see, the media center solution startup has a fairly straightforward way of getting content from providers like Hulu (the NBC and Fox-backed online video streaming site) to your Apple TV. This will allow me to eradicate cable — done deal.

But even for those without an Apple TV, Boxee offers a rich and interesting Apple TV (or… Continue Reading

Roundup: Americans watch 12 billion online videos, Tesla breaks production logjam and more

Here’s the latest action:

Americans watched 12 billion online videos in May — That’s up 45 percent compared to the same period in 2007. While Google’s sites — especially YouTube — remained dominant, accounting for 34.8 percent of videos watched, Fox Interactive Media (owner of MySpace) climbed to 6.4 percent, up 1.3 percent from the month before.

Tesla breaks production “logjam” — Chief executive Ze’ev Drori acknowledges that the electric car maker has been putting the old adage that… Continue Reading
