Location-based advertising: Place trumps traditional targeting

Location-based advertising: Place trumps traditional targeting

[Editor's note: It's no secret that online advertising is starting to slow down in response to the economic slump. Display ads, the meat and potatoes for companies like Yahoo, have been hit especially hard. So for companies looking to squeeze every dollar out of their digital ads, it might be time to abandon traditional content and behavioral targeting strategies in favor of a relatively new concept -- location-based advertising. Below, Placecast founder Anne Bezancon makes... Continue Reading

Eventful nabs Ticketmaster partnership, new funding

Eventful nabs Ticketmaster partnership, new funding

Online event-listing portals have been trying for a long time to get a cut of ticket sales. One of them, Eventful, seems to have finally gotten the Grail: a partnership with Ticketmaster, one of the world’s largest ticketing companies.

Under the deal, Eventful will be able to sell Ticketmaster stubs through its website. There’s no indication of what sort of cut Eventful will get, but the two companies are also agreeing to a co-advertising deal that… Continue Reading

1020 Placecast serves location-based ads on Eventful

When I got a chance to meet with events web site Eventful back in July to look at their iPhone application, the company informed me it was working on some interesting ways to incorporate advertisements. Today, it revealed those plans: It’s the first cross-platform partner of location-based ad-targeting service 1020 Placecast.

What this means is that Placecast will be in charge of serving up advertisements on Eventful’s webpages and on its mobile site — including the… Continue Reading

Track, purchase and demand local events via iPhone with Eventful

When developing its new iPhone and iPod Touch application, online event tracker Eventful had a good idea: Don’t port the entire kitchen sink over, port only the most core features needed to make a good application. It worked.

Event sites face-off

Event sites face-off

The events listing business has shrunk, with one competitor, Attendio, dropping out lately. The leading remaining competitors are, in rough order of apparent market share, Eventful, Yahoo’s Upcoming, Zvents and Going.com.

Among those four, there’s not yet a clear leader, nor have they yet attracted tens of millions of users — a reason Attendio cited for stepping aside. Capturing people’s attention when it comes to events, it seems, is harder than it might appear.

Further, there’s the… Continue Reading

Attendio leaves event listings in favor of widgets

updated
After being a portal for events for less than half a year, Attendio has abandoned the the events industry, saying that market is too small. It has decided instead to become a widget-making company, jumping from one crowded industry to another.

It’s just the latest indication that the Web 2.0 market is bubbly, and raises questions about why VCs keep investing in the sector. The San Francisco company raised (see coverage) less than $1 million in… Continue Reading
