Opera’s browser for mobile handsets gets little recognition in America, but it’s been downloaded from GetJar’s application catalog 25 million times. The current version of the app has been grabbed over 7 million times. (The top countries for Opera Mini usage are, in order, Russia, Indonesia, India, China, Ukraine, and South Africa.)

Sony Ericsson partners with GetJar to build app store
Why build an app store from scratch? Sony Ericsson’s upcoming app store, dubbed the PlayNow arena, will feature more than 45,000 free apps cataloged by GetJar. The apps, which cover 38 phone models in 13 countries, are a mix of Java and Symbian flavors. Sony Ericsson seems eager to avoid missing the current buzz over app stores. Thumbplay wrangles $6M for mobile content distribution
Thumbplay, provider of ringtones, wallpapers, games and other content specifically tailored to mobile phones, announced that it brought in $6 million in a sixth round of funding to cushion its business against the downturn. Based in New York, the company says that with the funds, it should find itself poised to expand rapidly once the slump ends sometime next year.
