GoodGuide lets you scan barcodes to find the most ethical products

GoodGuide, one of my favorite applications for the iPhone, just got a cool new feature — barcode scanning. Users could already consult the app for data on whether a product was healthy, environmentally-friendly, and socially-responsible, but now you don’t have to type in a search. Just scan the barcode, and the app brings up the relevant information.

The San Francisco company also announced a $5.5 million second round of funding led by new investor Physic Ventures,… Continue Reading

See what goes into your food with GoodGuide

I’ve been a big fan of GoodGuide — the online database for information about whether a product is healthy, environmentally friendly and ethical — since it launched at the TechCrunch50 conference in September. But as much as I admired GoodGuide, I didn’t actually use it all that much, simply because the site used to focus on products that I don’t spend much money on — namely personal care and household cleaning products, with the recent… Continue Reading

DEMO: CO2code lets consumers track carbon offsets

If you’re a consumer worried about global warming, but you feel uncertain about how to make a difference, you should check out a new product called CO2code, which offers a promising approach to the issue. In many ways, CO2code (developed by eFormic) operates like the “organic” label you already see on many products, but it’s focused on carbon emissions exclusively, and offers a lot more transparency for consumers.

The process begins when companies purchase an offset… Continue Reading

GoodGuide raises $3.73M for ethical shopping

GoodGuide, a site that helps shoppers find healthy, sustainable, and ethical products, has raised $3.73 million in a first round of venture funding.

The concept behind GoodGuide is rather obvious, but it was also tough to pull all the necessary data together. That’s why there are plenty of other sites offering information about how products measure up in a specific area — say, environmental friendliness — but none attempting to aggregate as much data from as… Continue Reading

GoodGuide’s iPhone app needs more Christmas presents

Updated

The best iPhone application that I’ve downloaded in the last few weeks is the mobile version of GoodGuide, the site that aggregates data about whether a product is safe, environmentally friendly and ethically manufactured. It’s already pretty useful as a web site, but becomes indispensable once it’s on your phone. With the app, you can access GoodGuide’s data when you’re actually shopping in the store, and the slick, easy-to-use interface doesn’t hurt, either.

Unfortunately, the GoodGuide… Continue Reading

GoodGuide helps you find healthy, sustainable, ethical products

GoodGuide helps you find healthy, sustainable, ethical products

GoodGuide has a simple goal — to become the one website you visit to understand whether a product is “good,” however you define good. That could mean safe for your kids, environmentally friendly or manufactured in an ethical way, whatever matters to you.

The company just finished its presentation at the TechCrunch50 conference in San Francisco, and it looks like another audience favorite.

If you’re looking for a good quality laundry detergent, for example, it’ll show you… Continue Reading
