Firefly Energy raises $16M for powered-up lead acid batteries
The Peoria, Ill., startup capped off a $16 million third round of funding to continue developing and marketing its carbon and graphite foam-based battery technologies for commercial and military use. Khosla Ventures and Infield Capital, which signed on as new investors to lead the deal, were joined by Stark Capital, Caterpillar and other previous investors.

Battery company, A123 Systems, loaded with cash
Battery maker A123 Systems has secured its place as the most heavily funded battery startup, adding $30 million in its fifth round of funding.
Early this year, A123 broke $100 million. The Watertown, Mass. company, which is developing new lithium ion technology, already has some products on the market, mainly batteries for hand-held power tools. More importantly, companies like General Electric are considering its technology for use in upcoming hybrid vehicles.

Battery maker, A123Systems, acquires hybrid-electric retrofitter, Hymotion
Clean-tech blogger Tyler Hamilton reports that Sequoia-backed Watertown, Mass-based battery maker A123Systems has quietly acquired Concord, Ontario-based Hymotion, which provides a kit to retrofit hybrid-electric cars into plug-in models. The two companies are already working together to supply plug-in hybrids to fleets in California and New York
