Endgame, the security software solution that looks at "billions" of data points to give you actions to take while an attack is happening, received $23 million in funding today and a new board member -- the former director of the NSA.

“Don’t be tomorrow’s headline,” reads security company Endgame‘s sparse website. The company, which touts that its technology — meant to catch an attack in progress — is used by “top national security agencies” raised $23 million in its second round of funding today.

The funding was led by Paladin Capital, a venture firm with roots both the security and government sectors, with participation from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Bessemer Ventures, TechOperators, and Columbia Capital. In addition to the funding, Endgame is also adding ex-National Security Agency director Lieutenant General Kenneth A. Minihan to its board. Minihan currently serves as the managing director of Paladin Capital.

Endgame’s technology looks at what it says is billions of mysterious “data points” to give you a clear picture of an attack that is coming or an attack in progress. It then provides you with “tactical actions” to take within seconds. What those tactical actions translates to is unknown, though it sounds like the company helps you put up even stronger defenses against assailants depending on the attack vector.

The company also recently scored Christopher Darby, the chief executive officer of the CIA’s venture arm In-Q-Tel as its newest chairman.

Endgame explained in a statement that it will use the money mostly for customer acquisition, focusing both on expanding its current “federal customer base” as well as getting more attention from the private sector.

The Greek mathematician Euclid understood the importance of numbers, as does a modern day startup by the same name.

Euclid has raised $17.3 million in its second round of funding to bring data analytics to physical retailers. Euclid gives brick-and-mortar businesses the ability to better understand their customers by monitoring their behavior while in the store. Merchants install a small sensor and connect it to the Internet. The sensor measures the behavior of all shoppers carrying a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone and then turns this data into understandable, actionable form.

The company refers to its approach as “Google Analytics for the real world” and seeks to give offline businesses the same advantages as online business when it comes to understanding consumer behavior. Store owners can capture information about which window displays receive the most attention, what times of day see the most foot traffic, and so forth.

Benchmark Capital led this round, with participation from NEA, Harrison Metal, and Novel TMT Ventures. Euclid officially launched in 2011 and announced $5.8 million in funding. Its founders previously started Urchin, which was acquired by Google and set the foundation for Google Analytics.

Now, the company has reportedly installed its sensors in over 30 apparel chains, quick-serve restaurants, shopping malls, department stores, and other brick-and-mortar locations. This national traction was fueled by the release of Euclid Zero earlier this year, which requires no dedicated sensors, but rather enables IT managers to turn on the Euclid feature in their Wi-Fi management console. All together, Euclid detects an average of three billion events per day.

Euclid is based in Palo Alto, California.

Radius raises $12.4 million for its database of small business data and the sales leads that come out of it.

Whether they mean to or not, all small businesses from tech startups in the center of Silicon Valley to quaint cupcake shops in South Carolina create digital ripples.

Radius has raised $12.4 million to measure these ripples and turn them into actionable sales insights.

Radius crawls the Internet for information about small businesses. The engine collects data in real time from over 22 million businesses and indexes it into a goldmine for sales teams. The information is highly searchable and, when combined with lead generation tools and CRM integrations, makes it much easier for companies to identify potential customers and partners.

The brain behind the company is Darian Shirazi, Facebook’s first intern, who forsook college to pursue life as an entrepreneur. Forbes recently named Shirazi one of its 30 Under 30 tech pioneers. Shirazi swung by the VentureBeat offices to chat about his startup, the funding, and the future of small businesses in America.

“There are big challenges today for business trying to sell to or work with small businesses because there is no good deep information about small mom and pop businesses,” he said. “We are trying to add as much data as we possibly can from all over the web to track the small business economy, which represents 70% of the American economy and is responsible for eight times as many jobs.”

Amassing data of this kind is difficult — many of these companies have a weak (or no) online presence, and their churn rate is extremely high. Shirazi said that 10% of small businesses either move, die, or come into being every month, making it a monumental task to keep up with the rapidly changing index. Furthermore, Radius faces challenges like variations in labels (such as “and” vs. “&”) and distinguishing between multiple stores with the same name. Shirazi and his team, however, are passionate and up for the task.

“My family has started businesses for hundreds of years,” he said. “I care about the small-business economy and I care about data. There isn’t really a way to do this halfway. We have spent the past three years working on this database. This funding will help us build a sales team for ourselves, add engineers, add new data sources, and build up a data science team to build the best data product out there for small businesses.”

Using Radius, sales and marketing teams targeting small businesses can apply specific filters like ratings, increasing/decreasing traffic, minority-owned etc., to pull up lists of businesses that fit their criteria. Based on the results, they can build informed and actionable lead lists. Target customers include daily deals and e-commerce sites, business insurance agencies, web hosting companies, and payment platforms.

The financial sector represents a major market for Radius’ technology, which is why American Express significantly contributed to this round. While Shirazi did not comment on whether this was a strategic partnership, he did say there was “alignment” and “overlap” between his product and American Express’ goals.

Radius’ data is valuable for a huge range of applications. As small business owners become more tech-savvy, this is just the first toe dip into the pool.

Existing investor Blue Run Ventures also participated, after throwing in for Radius’ first $6 million round along with Comcast. Radius is based in San Francisco and has 20 employees.

With gloomy skies and CloudBeat 2012 going on right now in Redwood City, the time is ripe for cloud company AgilOne to make two big announcements.

Today, the company launched its flagship solution (also called AgilOne) and announced the closure of a $10 million round of investment.

CloudBeat 2012 assembles the biggest names in the cloud’s evolving story to uncover real cases of revolutionary adoption. Unlike other cloud events, the customers themselves are front and center. Their discussions with vendors and other experts give you rare insights into what really works, who’s buying what, and where the industry is going. CloudBeat takes place Nov. 28-29 in Redwood City, Calif. Register today!

AgilOne provides cloud-based predictive marketing intelligence to help marketers figure out what their customers are going to do next. The platform serves as a “data scientist in the cloud.” It not only helps teams make sense of large quantities of data, but also make smarter marketing decisions and address issues of acquisition, retention, and reactivation.

Predictive algorithms monitor clients’ sites for risks and opportunities and send alerts about what is happening in the customer base. AgilOne then applies machine learning to show the reasons behind trends and results, and provides dashboards for measuring and analysis. Detailed customer profiles are also available, so marketers can quickly react to their customers’ behavior.

The platform is tailored to high-volume marketers and it works with large corporations such as Bosch, ideeli, Moosejaw, PetCareRx, and Shazam. Many marketing professionals do not have a background in complex math, and AgilOne seeks to give them the information they need without it.

The $10 million in financing was led by Mayfield Fund, with participation from Sequoia Capital who led the $6 million Series A last year. The money will be put towards expanding sales, marketing, and engineering efforts. AgilOne is based in Mountain View, California.

Sumo Logic, the “big data” startup that focuses on analytics, has pulled in $30 million for its third-round of funding.

Most large companies will generate terabytes of log data every day. This data can be used to troubleshoot operational issues, uncover security risks and ensure regulatory compliance.

Sumo Logic wants to replace company’s traditional log management systems, which typically leave 98% of data unanalyzed. Its founders say that Sumo Logic is unique as it’s cloud-based and can be set up in a matter of minutes.

The Silicon Valley-based startup, which competes most closely with Splunk, has scored some major-league enterprise customers that are willing to pay for its “premium” offering. The startup also offers a free service that is popular with startups and small businesses.

According to the company’s CEO, Vance Loiselle, Sumo Logic has signed on almost 40 paying customers since launching this February. It is used by the likes of GoDaddy, Netflix, Ooyala and Formspring to turn their log management data into actionable insights.

“Our log reduce engine can take thousands of pages of results and then shrink it down into logical patters based on our machine learning algorithms,” said Loiselle. “That’s a better way to get direction and insight than sifting through thousands of results.”

With the funding, the company will build out its sales, marketing and operations team.

Accel Partners, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm with a $100 million fund dedicated to big data startups, will lead the financing. Existing investors Sutter Hill Ventures and Greylock Ventures also participated in the round.

Even in our consumer-driven culture, the customer is always right.

Medallia has developed software that analyzes data about customer experiences. Today, the company announced raising $35 million for its technology, which measures customer feedback and provides insights that can serve to increase satisfaction, loyalty, and sales.

Using text analytics, data mining, and visualization, the platform looks at relevant content from the web, phones, SMS, mobile devices, and social networks. It closely tracks customer response to whatever services they are receiving, and empowers the businesses to quickly react to that feedback.

“Medallia’s software gathers customer feedback, either solicited survey feedback from stores, call centers and websites, or unsolicited social reviews and comments,” said CEO Borge Hald. “Managing this feedback in real time gives our customers a competitive advantage. They can instantly identify and respond to unhappy customers to reduce churn, invite their biggest fans to become more vocal advocates online, and they use feedback to inform new and better products and services.”

Two of its most used products are the Social Feedback for Hospitality and Mobile Feedback solutions. The company will be announcing new products next week. Medallia is used by 100 brands around the world, across a number of sectors including financial services, hospitality, and high-tech. Clients include Four Seasons, Sherwin-Williams, Honeywell, Sephora, Toyota Financial Services, and Sony EU.

This round of investment came entirely from Sequoia Capital and will enable Medallia to create more solutions and continue expansion.

Medallia is in Palo Alto, Calif. Read the press release.

It is Utility Analytics Week in Arlington Texas, a three day conference dedicated to [surprise] analytics for utilities.

This morning at the event, Space-Time Insight announced its second round of funding of $14 million. Space-TIme Insight use geospatial and visual analytic technology to help businesses interpret their energy and utility data.

Large companies have to deal with managing and monitoring resources from a number of sources. Space-Time Insight attempts to harness all that information and provide the tools to deal with problems as they arise.

It offers suites for Situational Intelligence utilities, like smart meters and grids, as well as for oil and gas, telecom, and transportation. The solutions look at how pieces of infrastructure is functioning and how this impacts the business. Customers include big, regional power and energy companies.

EnerTech Capital, Novus Energy Partners, and ClearSky Power & Technology threw in for this round, as did previous investor Opus Capital Ventures and Start Up Farms International. This brings the company’s total funding to $23 million. The Series A was raised in 2009.

Space-Time Insight is based in Fremont, CA.

You may not be able to buy love with money, but you can at least find out how much that love is worth. At least in terms of e-commerce: SumAll launched a metrics tool today that visually represents the power social media has on e-commerce.

SumAll Social Metrics consolidates transactional, social, and web traffic into one dashboard. The technology generates graphs and personalized reports as well data that is searchable by geography, demographics, and types of actions. Marketers can immediately see the connections between Facebook fans, Twitter followers, online activity, and sales data.

Businesses that dedicate significant amounts of time and effort to social media marketing have a vested internet in gauging how effective these efforts are. With SumAll, companies can seek out patterns, track trends, make side-by-side comparisons, and gain customer insights. This data can then be used to make business decisions and strengthen the user base.

The startup’s overarching mission is to make business-intelligence solutions accessible to small and medium-sized businesses — companies that lack the resources to capitalize on data analytics can use SumAll to see value of a “like” in dollars and cents.

SumAll is funded with $1.5 million from Battery Ventures, General Catalyst, Matrix Partners, and Wellington Partners. It is based in New York.

AbsolutData provides data analytics to companies around the world. While most businesses (and journalists) operating in technology hubs cannot escape the growing empire of big data, it is still a new concept in other parts of the world.

AbsolutData delivers its services in the U.S., as well as abroad. It has customers in 40 countries and across multiple industries, including consumer goods, hotel chains, pharmaceuticals, finance, telecom, and entertainment. These clients can make use of big data to drive sales, optimize marketing campaigns, increase revenue, acquire users, and retain clients. All the magical things big data apparently does.

Yes, it seems that big data is here to stay and will soon be an international phenomenon, much like Justin Bieber.

The partnership with Fidelity Growth Partners India will allow AbsolutData to further expand. The company currently has 275 employees and offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Gurgaon, India.

Unlike thevodka version of Absolut, this kind won’t give you a hangover. Just a better handle (pun intended) on your company’s data and performance metrics. With the additional profits, you can buy a bottle of Absolut Crystal.
