Overtone raises $2.5 million to look at brand resonance

Overtone, a San Francisco-based company that keeps tabs on brand recognition and penetration, as well as customer experiences, for companies, has brought in $2.5 million of an expected $5.3 million round of equity, according to a filing with the SEC. Formerly called Island Data, the company is backed by Dolphin Equity Partners, Encinal Capital Management (now Whelan Capital Management) and ABS Ventures. It previously raised $11 million.

Medical device maker Emphasys on the auction block

Emphasys Medical, maker of a valve that diverts air to only the healthy parts of lungs in emphysema patients, has put itself up for sale after the Food and Drug Administration rejected its lead product in December. This is the second relatively recent defeat for the Redwood City, Calif.-based company, which had to withdraw its IPO filing last May. Since then, all but five of its 50 employees have been laid off.

The Active Network, a network of sites targeting athletic and active-lifestyle users, announced today that it’s buying ReserveAmerica, an online service for booking campground space across the U.S., for an undisclosed amount.

Applied Identity, a San Francisco startup that improves enterprise IT security, has raised $10 million of a projected $15.3 million third round, according to Private Equity Hub, citing a regulatory filing. The Active Network, a San Diego, Calif.  sports community site, has raised $65 million in a fifth round of financing, according to PE Hub.

Canaan Partners led the deal, and was joined by fellow return backers like ESPN, ABS Ventures, North Bridge Venture Partners, Comdisco and Charles River Ventures.  New investors included Performance Equity and Tao Venture Partners.
