Google invests $1M in Chinese social networking company

Google has invested $1 million in Comsenz, a Chinese provider of social network software. It’s yet another move by Google to gain a foothold in China.

The investment occurred in July as part of Comsenz’s second round of venture funding, and it was recently revealed in a regulatory filing (see p. 39). Google buys Peakstream, to boost computing power

Peakstream, a Redwood City, Calif. company that sells software for building applications on multiple-processor chips, has been acquired by Google.

The amount was undisclosed. Peakstream had raised $23 million from Foundation Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital over the past two years, the latest round coming nine months ago (see our coverage).

Peakstream’s software seeks to improve the performance of applications running on multi-core chips.

Latest SEC filings: Extreme DA, iForem, Casabi, Synfora and Newcross all raise new funding

The following Bay Area companies have raised new rounds of capital, according to filings at the SEC as reported by Thomson Financial’s PE Wire:

–Extreme DA, of a Palo Alto, Calif. developer of semiconductor design tools, has raised $7.57 million in Series B funding from investors including Foundation Capital and Lanza Tech Ventures.

Water and food cleaning co., Novazone, raises $7M

Novazone, a Livermore start-up that provides a way to clean and disinfect food and water using ozone technology, has raised $7 million in a second round of financing.

Chrysalix Energy led the round with participation from existing investors, Foundation Capital and Grauer Capital. In addition, Greg Sullivan, managing director of Chrysalix Energy, has joined Novazone’s board of directors.

PeakStream Inc., a Redwood City, Calif.-based provider of software application platforms to the high-performance computing market, has raised $17 million in Series B funding, according to PE Week Wire. Foundation Capital led the deal, and was joined by return backers Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
