Tela closes $5.5M to scale semiconductor manufacturing
Tela Innovations, a Campbell, Calif. firm working to streamline semiconductor designs and manufacturing, has added three investors to close a $5.5 million third round of funding, reports VentureWire. The new backers, Cadence Design Systems, KT Venture Group and Qualcomm, join past contributors Intel Capital, AsiaTech Management, Sand Hill Finance, Teton Capital Group and Western Technology Investment.
The company plans to use the money to commercialize its semiconductor designs, aimed at efficiently scaling their processes.
Asetek calls in $16M to quietly cool laptops, other devices
Liquid cooling company Asetek, based in San Jose, Calif., has raised $16 million in its second round of venture funding.
Asetek makes cooling devices for PCs, laptops and other small-form computers, most of which today use forced air cooling driven by fans. The advantages of liquid cooling include a better thermal profile and less noise.

Fast, cheap gene-scanner BioNanomatrix gets $5M
BioNanomatrix, a Philadelphia developer of genome-analysis systems, raised $5.1 million in a first funding round. Investors included Battelle Ventures, Innovation Valley Partners, KT Venture Group, Ben Franklin Technology Partners and21Ventures.
BioNanomatrix is developing a single-molecule imaging and analysis system that the startup says is ideal for reading DNA sequences. The startup still isn’t divulging many details about its system, although the Philadelphia Inquirer suggested that the company’s “nanofluidics” technology could potentially read all three billion bases from a single DNA molecule without chopping it… Continue Reading
Cadence Design Systems buys chip design co., Clear Shape
Cadence Design Systems, a chip design company, has purchased Clear Shape Technologies, another chip design company.

Clear Shape, founded in 2003, had raised more than $10 million from investors including AsiaTech Management, Intel Capital, KT Venture Group, Telos Ventures and U.S. Venture Partners.
Blaze DFM, a semiconductor manufacturing software co., raises $10M
Blaze DFM, a Sunnyvale, Calif. maker of software for fabless semiconductor companies to give them greater control over manufacturing design and efficiency, has raised $10 million in venture capital.
It has also completed an acquisition of Aprio, a Santa Clara, Calif. company with operations in Japan and Taiwan that also provides semiconductor manufacturing design software.
