GreatCall raises $38 million for simple Jitterbug cell phones

GreatCall has built a business bucking the trend of feature-rich cell phones that are getting to be as complex as computers. Its Jitterbug phone is aimed at people who only want one simple thing out their phones — to make calls.

The Del Mar, Calif.-based company said today it has raised $38 million in a third round of funding so it can build additional sales channels and develop new services, applications and devices.

Jitterbug, which sells phones for elderly, raises $5M

Jitterbug, a Del Mar, Calif. company that targets elderly users (aged 55+) of cell-phones, offering phones with big buttons and simple, clear screens, has raised $5 million from Nauta Capital, a Spanish venture capital firm.

The phones are co-designed with Samsung. Jitterbug says it has more than 20,000 new subscribers since its launch in October 2006.

CarrierIQ, a wireless carrier intelligence company, raises $4M more

Carrier IQ, a Mountain View start-up that tracks data collected from a mobile phone user’s experience, has raised $4 million more dollars, from Spanish venture capital firm, Nauta Capital.

The company, launched by WebTV co-founder Bruce Leak, is now run by Mark Quinlivan, who is former chief operating officer of edocs (acquired by Siebel).
