Sun sets on satellite operator ProtoStar

ProtoStar, a company that leases satellite usage to broadband providers in Asia, has filed for bankruptcy and is moving quickly to sell off its remaining satellites, reports VentureWire. The San Francisco-based company fell upon hard times when it lost two customers to the economic downturn, putting one of its satellites out of commission.

DigitalBridge lands $16.5M for rural wireless growth

Wireless broadband provider DigitalBridge Communications snagged $16.5 million in a third round of funding, including $8.5 million in debt. The money will be used to scale the business, which focuses on expanding wireless broadband services to rural areas.

VBrick snags $10.4 for streaming video

Vbrick Systems is a relatively old member of the online video scene. For a decade it’s provided technology to websites for video hosting. As the field has evolved, so has the company, which just raised $10.4 million and plans to launch new hardware and software for streaming and pay-per-view video. DigitalBridge Communications raises $20M for rural broadband

Whether WiMAX will ever appear from major providers like Sprint is uncertain, but DigitalBridge thinks it can effectively sell the service by offering it to small rural communities.

The company plans on serving markets with fewer than 150,000 residents, of which there are quite a few, in the vast middle spaces between the United State’s two coasts.
