Portal’s test chambers created to scale in Minecraft (video)

In the wake of yesterday’s report on the Minecraft Game of Thrones recreation, it’s only fitting that today we find this stunning one-to-one scale re-creation of the famous test chambers from Portal, Valve’s unexpected hit originally released for the PC and Xbox 360 as part of their Orange Box game bundle.

Game of Thrones painstakingly recreated in Minecraft (video)

Some of the modern world’s most iconic institutions can be found in Minecraft: the Empire State building, a 1000:1 scale Monopoly board, the U.S.S. Enterprise, and–oh yeah–the planet Earth. But the video below tops them all, as gamers have taken it upon themselves to recreate the world of Game of Thrones piece-by-piece. The things we do for nerd cred….

Gunning for another Kickstarter success Minecraft-style

Curious how a first-person shooter with crafting elements and “total environmental destruction” would play? For a modest $15 you can pre-purchase indie game Guncraft and help the developers meet their Kickstarter funding goal of $16,000 to finish the project. It combines typical multiplayer shooter gunplay with the creative crafting and environmental transformations made popular by Minecraft.

Minecraft official LEGO set ready for pre-order

More than 5 million people have been playing with virtual building blocks in Minecraft. This summer, they’ll get the opportunity to manually assemble 480 physical pieces with LEGO Minecraft Micro World. The $34.99 toy set comes with four customizable vignettes of Minecraft-themed LEGO pieces and two adorable figures, game character Steve and a Creeper (this monster’s tendency to spontaneously explode remains limited to the computer game).

Mojang to live-stream game-building for charity

In a blog post Wednesday, Mojang noted that they’ll be creating a new game in 60 hours starting Friday, Feb. 17, with the proceeds going to charity. Even more interesting, the development will be streamed live through the Humble Indie Bundle website for all to see. They’re asking for donations, which will benefit a charitable cause as well as net all donators a copy of the game Mojang ends up producing.

New details and Outland screens from “World of Warcraft within Minecraft” project (exclusive interview)

A 27-year-old U.S. graduate student known as “Ramses” is creating a stir in the community of Minecraft, the sandbox-building game by Swedish development studio Mojang. Within Minecraft’s blocky world, he has spent about 100 hours so far on a re-creation of Azeroth, the enormous setting of Blizzard’s massively multiplayer game, World of Warcraft (WoW).

LEGO Minecraft sets to become a reality, as project gets green light

Seemingly a match made in heaven, a proposed collaboration between LEGO and hit indie game Minecraft has now been given the official green light.  A proposal for the idea was submitted by Minecraft developer Mojang back in December, and LEGO has now announced that it is “developing a concept that celebrates the best aspects of building with the LEGO system and in Minecraft.”

Print your Minecraft designs as 3D models using Mineways

Minecraft is the indie sandbox game that just keeps on giving. Developer Mojang already has a LEGO project under review, and now a free-to-use program has been released that helps you to print out your Minecraft creations as real objects, on a 3D printer.

Review: A Minecraft review isn’t really possible, but we’ll try anyway

How the hell do you write a review for a game that’s been out since 2009? A game that you’ve played across many changes, with additions and subtractions, a game without a box, a user manual, or, really, any sort of guiding pedagogy. I’ve personally spent at least 100 hours, probably more, playing this procedurally generated oddity of a video game across the beta and official versions, on servers, my own server, and in single player modes. And yet, I still can’t seem to get a simple handle on it, and why it keeps me coming back for more.

The DeanBeat: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception tops our list of the 10 best games of 2011

This year, with our ramped up our GamesBeat review team, we’ve taken our Game of the Year choices much more seriously than we have in the past. We asked our reviewers to select the semifinalists and then picked the final winners ourselves. But our vote on the best game of 2011 ended in a tie, so we had to hold a tie-breaker round to pick our winner.

Hands up for Lego Minecraft

The indie game sensation Minecraft may soon be immortalized with its very own LEGO sets, if developer Mojang gets its wish. Mojang has submitted a proposal for LEGO Minecraft on the Cuusoo community site, which could see the dream collaboration become a reality.
