Everyone wants to have a piece of the mobile pie, but which venture capitalists are actually succeeding?

Onavo Insights, the analysis arm of mobile data compression firm Onavo, has released a series of charts ranking VC firms by the actual outreach of their portfolios in the United States. Typically we see VCs ranked on the value of their exits, but if you’re looking to see who actually has influence in the mobile world, market share is likely a better indicator.

When it comes to early stage investors, Onavo Insights found that New York City’s Union Square Ventures is the mobile leader by a huge margin. Union Square’s portfolio, which includes Tumblr, Foursquare, Etsy, and Twitter, has a combined 43.8 market share in the United States. The No. 2 firm, Sequoia Capital, has almost half that figure, with a 23.4 percent share.

In terms of all funding rounds, Kleiner Perkins tops the list, with a 71.3 percent share. That’s not surprising, since it includes heavyweights like Twitter, Pinterest, Spotify, and Waze. Institutional Venture Partners ranked second, with a 63.5 share. Union Square Ventures still ranked fourth, even though it focuses entirely on early-stage investments.

To be fair, Onavo didn’t count exited companies from any portfolios (which some may see as a bigger sign of success). The data is based on January 2013 market share numbers from Onavo Insights.

Onavo calls Insights the “largest mobile intelligence service” — and for good reason. It relies on data from more than 1 million users of Onavo’s data compression app, giving it an inside view at what apps people actually use. That’s a unique slice of data when many other analysis firms are relying on extrapolation rather than hard figures.

Click on the charts below to find the full interactive charts on Onavo’s website.

App developers love to tout download and engagement figures, but it’s often tough to verify their (sometimes padded) claims. Onavo aims to change that with the launch of Onavo Insights, a new mobile market intelligence platform

Onavo Insights is powered by a large sample of more than 1 million users of the company’s popular data compression app. Since Onavo’s app gets a fairly extensive view of the apps people use on their smartphones, it’s in a unique position to report on a variety of statistics. Now anyone can get a glimpse of all that juicy data, including usage, engagement, and retention figures.

The intelligence platform brings the sort of data we’ve seen on TV and the web to mobile apps, Onavo chief executive Guy Rosen said in an interview with VentureBeat several months ago. Onavo has been working on Insights since last year, and so far it has signed up dozens of major mobile companies for its premium services, which gives them an even deeper view of how users are interacting with their apps.

Currently the free Onavo Insights service only offers data on iPhone apps in the U.S., but Onavo is working on making data for other platforms available soon. According to Onavo’s Data, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram are the top three iPhone apps in the U.S. Facebook sports a whopping 72.5 percent market share, while YouTube has a 44.1 percent share. (Yet another stat that makes the ubiquity of Facebook somewhat scary.)

Onavo is based in Tel Aviv, Israel, and has raised a total of $13 million from Horizon Ventures and Motorola Mobility Ventures.

In the battle between made-up consumer holidays, it looks like Black Friday still reigns supreme on mobile devices.

When it comes to increases in usage, mobile apps from Amazon, Newegg, and Gilt all saw significantly higher gains on Black Friday compared to Cyber Monday, according to data compiled by the mobile data compression company Onavo.

The findings throw some water on the hype from eBay and Paypal, which were trying to make the term “Mobile Monday” replace Cyber Monday given the performance on their apps. Onavo’s data, which is compiled anonymously from more than 100,000 US iPhone owners running the company’s compression app, shows that eBay’s mobile app did see a rise on Cyber Monday — but for other popular shopping apps, that was far from the case.

For example, Amazon saw a 222 percent increase in app usage on Black Friday, compared to a 171 percent bump on Cyber Monday. And Gilt saw a massive increase of 185 percent last Friday, compared to 87 percent on Monday.

No matter what you think of annoying shopping holidays, it’s hard to deny the increasing importance of mobile shopping for online retailers.
