LevelEleven helps kick your salesforce’s performance up a notch for those instances where you “need that extra push over the cliff.” The Software-as-a-Service company accomplishes this by introducing game-based competition to your sales team via an integration with the Salesforce CRM.

Founder Bob Marsh is no stranger to the impact game-based competition can have on an organization’s bottom line. He most recently served as a sales executive at Detroit-based Eprize, a company that facilitates online contests and promotions for companies ranging from Travelocity to Microsoft’s Xbox Live Rewards. It was at Eprize where the he first conceived of the concept for LevelEleven. Marsh worked his way from concept to paying customer in just four months to start LevelEleven.

“A fundamental flaw of most sales managers is thinking that implementing a CRM on its own is the solution. That [thinking] is like being behind the wheel of a powerful vehicle, but it’s stuck in park.” The focus, Marsh explains, should be centered around incentivizing a salesforce by rewarding the right behaviors that result in sales. Thus, LevelEleven’s current product offering, Compete, enables sales managers to structure contests and competitions around desired sales outcomes.

LevelEleven’s funding efforts were led by Detroit Venture Partners, the early-stage venture capital fund backed by mortgage magnate Dan Gilbert, and the company took up residence in Detroit’s Madison Building alongside a number of startups backed by the venture fund. The nearly century-old former theater has become a mecca for technology startups and a destination for entrepreneurs from across the country. With additional funding from Hyde Park Ventures, investor Rick Inatome, and the First Step Fund, LevelEleven altogether secured $1.5M in seed funding.

Flush with funding, the company is poised to capitalize on an $18 billion global market that grew by 12.5 percent last year. From it’s launch in October of last year, LevelEleven has scaled its subscription based, SaaS model to over 80 enterprise-level customers: garnering business from companies including 3M, OpenTable, and Comcast.

Adobe says its marketing cloud is a single service that includes everything digital marketers need to get ahead.

Shift begs to differ.

“We’re bringing the market alternative to the closed, rigid marketing cloud that Adobe and Salesforce have created,” Shift CEO James Borow told me yesterday. “If you look at their marketing clouds, it’s really only about companies they’ve acquired and built. But the problem is, as the market moves, you really can’t acquire or build companies fast enough.”

The concept of a marketing cloud is a interoperable suite of tools that together provide the digital marketer — and today, is there any other kind? — everything they need to find, understand, attract, engage, monitor, communicate, and track consumers, fans, and customers.

Today, that’s largely about search and social.

So what Shift has done is assemble what Borow considers an all-star cast of digital marketing tools together in one platform. It’s not buying them all and not integrating them all into one inseparable suite, but making them all available in one environment, with a certain amount of interoperability, data share, and single sign in.

“Ultimately, we’re trying to break down these silos of communication,” Burrow says.

Today, those tools include:

Aggregate Knowledge (media buying intelligence platform)

Convertro (conversion-tracking and ROI optimization)

Curalate (marketing and analytics for Pinterest and Instagram)

Expion (social media management)

Fan Appz (personalized social media marketing)

Kenshoo (search and social ad tools)

Moontoast (rich media social ad creation)

Offerpop (social media marketing campaign platform)

Optimal Analytics (Facebook advertising and analytics)

SocialFlow (conversion tool for Twitter and Facebook)

The Trade Desk (online media buying platform)

GraphEffect (social advertising)

Shift has brought all these tools together within one network with its own graph, somewhat analogous to Facebook’s social graph, that tracks marketing actions and attention-needed data points within each tool and provides that data in a social-network style feed.

In other words, yes, sort of like Facebook for your marketing campaign.

Source: Shift

Shift marketing cloud

The result is that all the members of your marketing team, whether internal, freelance, or at an agency, can visit the site and see what’s happening with your marketing campaign in a simple, linear view. The site incorporates a permissioning model so that people in different roles see appropriate information, and many of the updates are generated by the tools you’re using themselves.

So, what’s the cost?

“Shift is totally free,” Borow says. “And Shift will always be free.”

You can sign into Shift, create teams, invite colleagues, and go to the “app store” to install marketing apps. If you have existing accounts with them, they’ll just automatically sync up and you can use those tools within Shift’s collaboration network. If you don’t and you do happen to sign up to a new tool, Shift will take a small revshare from that transaction.

“Today, we feel like we have a really competitive stack against all the other marketing clouds,” Borow told me, adding that Shift will be adding new tools and companies on a quarterly basis. “The enterprise to date has focused on closed systems, but our thesis is that closed systems end up less dynamic and less competitive.”

That may be so, and there’s a lot in Shift’s open marketing cloud.

But there’s also so work remaining to be done. Integration between the participating apps is a little slim right now, with some integrations requiring developer work. Customer relationship management is perhaps the most obvious gap at the moment, especially considering that is natively to Salesforce clients. All of which is coming, Borow said.

And, as the company adds more tools to the toolbox, the solution will become more compelling with time.

Femtocells, human organs, and space: Funding daily for April 3 is full as 13 companies raised money, financing, or were sold.

Here’s a quick overview:

Femtocells sell

Cisco bought femtocell and small cell manufacturer Ubiquisys for $310 million today.

Femtocells and small cells, apparently, are important for helping boost 3G and LTE reception in homes and buildings. Cisco SVP Kelly Ahuja said in a statement that “by acquiring Ubiquisys, we are expanding on our current mobility leadership and our end-to-end product portfolio, which includes integrated, licensed, and unlicensed small cell solutions that are tightly coupled with SON, backhaul, and the mobile packet core.

Boring stuff sells, apparently.

Cash for enterprise startups

Ignition Partners closed a new $150 million fund to focus on enterprise startups: business software and cloud computing. The fund is also opening a Palo Alto, Calif. office.

Human organs on chips

Hurel, the company that created a breakthrough organ-on-a-chip to replace skin allergy testing on animals, announced that it’s receiving $9.2 million Series A funding from Spring Mountain Capital. The funds will support the commercial launch of current products and continued R&D of its technologies and future products.

Space, infinity, and high-def

UrtheCast is launching the world’s first high-definition video platform of Earth, streamed live from the International Space Station. A new $25 million financing agreement is going to help that become a reality, apparently.

“When you begin using the platform, it will feel much like you’re interacting with a mashup of Google Earth and YouTube,” the company said.

Dollars for tags

Tealium raised $15.6 million from Tenaya Capital, Battery Ventures, and Presidio Ventures to continue building and marketing the “fastest, easiest to use, and most data-focused tag management platform on the market.”

Tealium’s total funding is now $27 million.

Big money for small loans

Small loan company Kabbage has closed a credit facility of $75 million, its largest to date. The company provides working capital to small business-owners so they won’t need to put personal assets on the line, like a house or car.

Victory Park Capital led the funding round, and equity investor Thomvest Ventures also contributed.

Integrating $37 million

API and data integration company MuleSoft raised $37 million from just about everybody. New Enterprise Associates led, with participation by other investors including Salesforce, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Morgenthaler Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, SAP Ventures, and Bay Partners.

Hopefully, the company will use some of the money to brainstorm a new name.

Including the new round, MuleSoft has raised $81 million to date.

Mobile device management for $2 million, Alex

MokiMobility announced $2 million seed round from Epic Ventures, Allegis Capital partner Spencer Tall and Fusion-IO’s Tyler Smith.

And, briefly …

EAT Club announced $5 million from August Capital for expansion beyond Silicon Valley.

New York based startup BA Insight announced a $4.5 million round of funding with participation from all four of its initial investors: Milestone Venture Partners, Osage Venture Partners, Paladin Capital Group and Originate Ventures.

Neon, the Carnegie Mellon University startup that uses cognitive neuroscience to improve online video clicks, has secured venture capital (VC) funding in a seed round led by True Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm. Terms were not released.

iPad presentation creator Haiku Deck has raised a first round of $3 million from Trilogy Partnership, with participation from Madrona Venture Group, Founders Co-op, and various angel investors.

Now thanks to Salesforce and FirstRain, building smart mobile apps for businesses to activate all that data just got a lot easier and more powerful.

How simple? Think clicks, not code.

Last last year, Salesforce released its Touch Platform to extend its business intelligence, analytics, and data platform to mobile apps. It’s a powerful, write-once deploy-anywhere platform that makes quick mobile development easy for companies that use Salesforce, because it’s built around the idea that you can develop with your mouse, not your keyboard.

Today, FirstRain is bringing that platform alive with its first third-party enterprise integration: a drop-in HTML5 component that offers advanced in-app business analytics.

“We provide customer intelligence to enterprise sales teams at the world’s largest companies,” FirstRain CEO Penny Herscher told me last week. “GE Capital says we make the middle 70 percent of their sales team as well informed as the top 10 percent.”

Businesses can use Touch Platform to create apps for their in-house needs via drag-and-drop functionality. Companies can build apps for specific workflows, type of jobs, or classes of employees quickly and easily — a SalesForce representative told me the goal was to “democratize programming so that even business analysts can build and deploy apps themselves.”

That platform, however rich it is with Salesforce data and tools, becomes richer when other companies develop for it, building unique components that those same business analysts can then use in their apps … which is exactly what FirstRain has done.

FirstRain’s business is providing business intelligence on your customers — and your customers’ customers. The goal is that sales teams have a wealth of information about who they are approaching for a sales call, knowing not just how their products work, but also how their products would fit into their prospects’ corporate strategy.

Now, Salesforce customers can build that power into custom apps for their sales reps via drag-and-drop.

“The best sales teams know how to challenge the customer,” Herscher says. “The top 10 percent do this automatically, but the middle 70 percent doesn’t … so we automate the experience.”

Many of FirstRain’s customers, she says — companies like HP, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, and Qualcomm — are equipping their teams with Salesforce for customer relationship management, a selling methodology tailored to their industry and company, and FirstRain for customer intelligence.

If you’re a salesperson at a major company today, chances are you’re using something like Salesforce Sales Cloud or SAP to manage your accounts and contacts. And chances are that you hate them.

“Customer relationship management systems right now are monoliths,” Dexplora co-founder Hampus Jakobsson told me by phone. “Developers are filling them with lot of tools but forgetting to create software for actual people,” he said.

Jakobsson’s cure for the problem is GetSalesDone, an iPhone app that combines the power of Salesforce with the design elegance of iOS. The idea behind the app is simple: If companies want their sales people to actually use and update their CRM systems (which means better reports and forecasting), they first have to use systems that are as well-designed as the average smartphone app.

Design is something that Jakobsson knows well. Ten years ago he helped create The Astonishing Tribe, the firm that designed the interface for a little operating system called Android before being scooped up by RIM in 2010.

“We were focused on user interface back before it was even a major buzzword ,” Jakobsson said.

With CRM systems, Jakobsson’s target now is a bit different, but the underlying mission still remains the same: In in undying words of Thoreau: Simplify, Simplify!

Simplification doesn’t mean creating a weak product, however. Jakobsson’s says he believes that, by making CRM more simple, GetSalesDone can help sales people deliver far better results.

“You could build Salesforce so that it looks like Flipboard,” Jakobsson said. After seeing what Dexplora is working on, perhaps Salesforce should create something that looks like GetSalesDone.

GetSalesDone is launching a beta today and Jakobsson says to expect Apple to approve the iPhone app relatively soon.

Salesforce.com has acquired EntropySoft, a French startup that offers content integration solutions.

A spokesperson confirmed that the deal recently closed, but the company won’t be making a formal announcement.

EntropySoft’s sales executive Serge Guillerme updated his LinkedIn account this month to reflect his new position as a customer success strategy manager at Salesforce.

The technology is used by software vendors and large companies to simplify integration of their products with enterprise content management (ECM) tools and cloud repositories.

EntropySoft has pulled in $3.5 million in funding from French venture firm, Alven Capital, and has teams in France and in the United States.

The company has signed agreements with over 25 U.S. vendors over the years, including Symantec and EMC.

This story will be updated as we learn more.

Salesforce.com’s aggressive acquisition strategy and its dual emphasis on all things cloud and mobile appear to be paying off.

This quarter, the company weathered Hurricane Sandy, as well as the negative press surrounding its recent lay-offs. Just weeks after the media foresaw “signs of trouble” and referred to Buddy Media as a “money pit,” the cloud computing giant reported higher than expected revenues.

(Enterprise cloud computing is the focus of VentureBeat’s upcoming CloudBeat 2012 conference, November 28-29 in Redwood Shores, Calif.)

Salesforce beat the Wall Street Journal’s top and bottom line estimates with reported revenues of $788 million for its third quarter, up 35 percent year-over year and up 7.6 percent from the previous quarter. On average, analysts predicted revenue of $776.6 million.

In its earnings report, the company initiated its forecast for its 2014 fiscal year (which is the 2013 calendar year for the rest of humanity), projecting revenue between $3.8 billion and $3.85 billion for the year, in line with analysts’ $3.83 billion.

Shares rose 1.8 percent to $148.59 in after-hours trading. However, Reuters reported that share prices may have dropped in recent weeks due to concerns about IT budgets running dry, which would crimp IT managers’ ability to purchase Salesforce.com’s services. Overall, on a GAAP basis, however, Salesforce’s operations were down in the third quarter of 2012 — GAAP net loss per share was -$1.55. According to the company, this was due to a one-time, tax-related charge.

Marc Benioff, the company’s CEO, has been pitching the company’s new suite of “social enterprise” technologies, which enable companies to track and monitor what their customers are saying about them on Facebook and Twitter. Salesforce projects a billion-dollar opportunity in software for marketers – and has made a spate of recent acquisitions to get ahead of the game. This year, Salesforce announced its new offering, Marketing Cloud, a new software suite created from Buddy Media, a recent buy up, and Radian6, the social media monitoring tool that was acquired in 2011.

Benioff claimed in an official statement that Salesforce is the first enterprise cloud computing company to exceed a $3 billion annual revenue run rate. I can almost see him in the company’s San Francisco headquarters fist-pumping employees.

“Given the strong customer response to our next generation social and mobile cloud technologies, I’m delighted to announce that we expect to surpass a $4 billion annual revenue run rate during our fiscal year 2014,” he said.

Salesforce’s goal is to prove that it is far more than a sales CRM tool, and to take on behemoths like Oracle and SAP.

Today Revstream, which already processes over $25 billion in annual revenues for Twitter, Facebook, Activision, and VMware, among other companies, announced that it is releasing a version of its software on Force.com. The new cloud-based app will allow startups and growing businesses to manage their revenue, stay standards-compliant, and forecast future earnings.

In case you’re wondering, revenue management is not exactly page-turning stuff — perhaps unless you’re an accountant — but it is a potential life-saver.

Why?

Revenue management and recognition is increasingly difficult, with simple sales being replaced by subscriptions, upgrades, downgrades, bundles, and delayed revenue recognition deals. At the same time, regulatory requirements from the SEC, GAAP rules, and Sarbanes Oxley have greatly increased the complexity around revenue recognition issues.

“We were formed to help solve the problem of revenue management and revenue recognition,” Revstream CEO Rajiv Chopra told me last week. “It’s a problem because the way companies are built and the way revenue is recorded are not in sync.

A decade ago the problem only affected a portion of your business, he said. But now, with the explosion of cloud services and the incredible profusion of ad-supported businesses … 100 percent of many companies’ revenue is under scrutiny.

Revstream, which integrates into a company’s billing systems with a very high degree of automation, essentially guarantees that your revenue recognition, income forecasts, and lifetime value of customer projections are standards and regulations-compliant. That’s important for companies who are planning to IPO, startups that might eventually be acquired, or even startups that are planning a follow-on round of financing.

“We decided that small companies and pre-IPO companies needed this,” Chopra said. “So we packaged it into a software-as-a-service solution on Force.com so we can deliver it in the cloud. In a nutshell, it brings the same compliance at a much lower price point.”

That high degree of automation which is important for enterprise customers is even more important for small customers, Chopra told me. The same is true for ease of integration, which can hinder acceptance or use of a new software capability. That’s why the company built the cloud version on Force.com … which bakes in both automation and integration right from the start.

“Most customers we talk to already have a billing system … it’s called a website,” said Chopra with tongue somewhere in the vicinity of his cheek. “They don’t need an ERP system, they just need a revenue management system.”

NEW YORK CITY — Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, always game for a little tech trash talk, said that Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system would be “the end of Windows” and that “Windows is irrelevant.”

Benioff, answering questions at a press conference at the Cloudforce show in Manhattan, mostly kept to the script of promoting Salesforce’s cloud services during the Q&A session with reporters and analysts. The main Cloudforce keynote mostly mimicked all the announcements at Dreamforce last month, except for the just-announced addition of 20 social analytics services to its Marketing Cloud.

Veering off-script (or was it?), Benioff talked about Windows 8 in regard to the entire computing market. He first spoke about a conversation he had had with an exec-level Salesforce customer and how this customer said she wouldn’t move her company to Windows 8.

Then, Benioff turned to his own thoughts on the new Microsoft OS, which launches Oct. 26. He said that people were not having frequent conversations about traditional computers anymore — people are instead talking about which smartphones and tablets they want to buy. He name-checked the iPhone 5 and the Kindle Fire HD as examples.

With that in mind, Windows 8, he noted, was no longer important. He said CIOs had upgraded to Windows 7 because they didn’t have another choice, but now things have changed.

“Windows 8 is the gambit — will [CIOs] upgrade, or will they do something else?” Benioff said. “It’s the end of Windows. … Windows is irrelevant.”

To be fair, Windows 8 will work on desktops, laptops, and laptop/tablet hybrid computers. That flexibility means the OS can help equip all kinds of devices that employees might want or need. Enterprises could adopt Windows 8 tablet hybrids like the Samsung’s ATIV Smart PCs, for example.

And then we’ve got Windows RT, which looks a lot like Windows 8 and runs on ARM-based tablets. Microsoft’s first Surface tablet runs RT and includes a version of Office installed. It looks to like a tool enterprises might take a look at versus Apple’s iPad.

Even with those caveats, Benioff’s words were certainly eye-popping and something that could echo with CEOs and CIOs across the enterprise. As a visionary for cloud computing and cloud-based software, his words carry weight.

Salesforce.com claims that its annual San Francisco-based conference is the largest cloud computing event of the year. With over 60,000 people in attendance this year, this may well be true. The majority popped in and out of the event, and were primarily interested in listening in to the keynote addresses by Salesforce’s CEO, Marc Benioff, and Virgin Group’s Richard Branson. Another highlight for ticket-holders was the performance by aging rockers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Attendees will have noticed a number of new faces. Salesforce.com has been on an acquisition spree this year, buying up five companies including social media marketing company, Buddy Media, and most recently, co-browsing startup, GoInstant. These execs brought into the company through acquisitions were given a starring role at the conference.

A number of new products were announced at Dreamforce, including Salesforce Touch, Marketing Cloud, Chatterbox and so on. To read more about the announcements, read our coverage here.

According to Salesforce.com, a crowd of 90,000 people will gather in San Francisco tomorrow morning to listen in to the keynote address from the company’s outspoken CEO, Marc Benioff. This number may be a slight exaggeration, but nonetheless it signals the company is not just a customer relationship management (CRM) giant in the eyes of the tech community.

Salesforce made five acquisitions this year as it expands its suite of tools to every corner of the enterprise, fueling an endless stream of rumors. Who will they buy next? No doubt, this will be a major talking point at the conference, alongside discussions about how the company will integrate the startups it recently acquired.

Tech conferences can be overwhelming, so we compiled talking points for you. Whether you’re planning to attend or are simply curious, here’s what to expect at Dreamforce 2012.

“Chatter” and cloud storage — Who will Salesforce.com acquire?

Salesforce‘s CEO Marc Benioff’s knows how to command the attention of a room; he dropped a bomb at Disrupt last week in San Francisco. Immediately following an enterprise panel featuring cloud service providers, Box and Okta, he announced the introduction of two competing products.

“We are not trying to snuff competitors out,” he said, shortly after making the announcement. Benioff also hinted that the company would add file-storage features to Chatter, the social enterprise tool that is similar to Microsoft-owned Yammer. The tool is called ChatterBox — a nod to potential competitor, Box?

As it typically does, Salesforce may be gearing up for an acquisition. Rumors abounded that Box would be the primary target. I hopped on the phone with Box’s CEO Aaron Levie who responded with a firm “absolutely not”. Levie told me that Salesforce might be entering into the cloud storage space, but that few companies truly understand the value of file sharing and collaboration.

Putting the rumors to bed, a spokesperson from Salesforce told me to expect news about Dropbox, Box’s primary competitor. An integration, perhaps? Expect plenty of discussion around Chatter and new file storage capabilities.

What’s next for Buddy Media?

Salesforce’s most expensive buy was Buddy Media, which it picked up for $689 million in August. Buddy Media is one of the biggest makers of social media tools for the enterprise. The result is Salesforce Marketing Cloud, a social networking platform for marketing. This was integrated with technology gained from both Buddy Media and Radian6, a social media monitoring provider.

Marketing Cloud is expected to be officially announced Wednesday morning by Benioff during his keynote address.

Do.com is hotting up!

Do.com, Salesforce’s productivity tool that competes with Asana, recently upgraded its product with a host of new features. Do also recently graduated from being a free app to a fremium service. Led by Manymoon’s founder (a startup acquired by Salesforce last year), it recently announced its first huge customer: Google.

Sean Whiteley, Salesforce’s senior VP told VentureBeat last month that Do.com signed up several hundred thousand users with “zero dollars spent on marketing.” With skyrocketing adoption rates, the company will be looking for ways to monetize the service.

In addition, Benioff mentioned Do.com at Disrupt last week, so I expect to hear more from him on this topic at Dreamforce.

Will they revive Force.com?

Salesforce may have talked it up, but as industry analyst Ray Wang told Computer World, Force.com is not particularly intuitive or easy to use. We may not hear any announcements this year, but it’s a good conversation topic to raise with fellow conference-goers. During panels, ask questions about whether the company will invest in its development.

Salesforce, AT&T, Motorola, and AMD are four tech companies in a group most CEOs would love to belong to, but most public relations departments would hate.

The American taxpayer? She might hate it too.

The Institute for Policy Studies released a report this morning on 26 companies that pay their executives more than the entire corporation pays the U.S. government in taxes. The problem? Tax code structures that encourage high executive pay by allowing deductions for performance-based pay, for one.

The 26 firms, which have 537 foreign subsidiaries in tax havens like Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and Gibraltar, each had an average of more than $1 billion in pre-tax income … and tax benefits averaging $163 million. And IPS estimates the four biggest direct tax subsidies cost taxpayers over $14 billion a year.

AMD paid chief executive Rory P. Read $15.6 million while paying negative $3 million in taxes (if only we all could pay negative taxes). AT&T paid Randall Stephenson $18.7 million while collecting a sweet tax check of negative $420 million. And Google’s new pet, Motorola, must have some good accountants: The company shows up on the list not once but twice.

Motorola Mobility showed up for CEO Sanjay Jha, paying him a whopping $47 million while paying precisely zero, zilch, and nada in U.S. corporate income tax. Of course, the company lost half a billion dollars in 2011: You need talented people to lose that much in just 12 months. And Motorola Solutions — the part of the original Motorola that Google did not buy — tossed Gregory Brown a relatively paltry $29.3 million while paying taxes of just $2 million.

It’s kind of what we said last week: In the income battle between the CEO and you, you’re not winning.

The full list:
