Bing on the iPhone lets you search friends’ updates, adds “visual scanning”

Following the release of Apple’s iOS4 iPhone update yesterday, and in anticipation of the upcoming iPhone 4 launch on Thursday, Microsoft released an updated version of its Bing iPhone app this morning that introduces two new features: Social networking integration, and a feature it’s calling Visual Scanning, which lets you search bar codes and media cover art with your camera.

Barcode tagger Stickybits scores $1.6 M in funding

Stickybits, a startup aiming to slap barcodes on real-world objects to link them to virtual information, has raised $1.6 million in additional seed funding on top of earlier $300,000 in initial funding. The company scored some new investors, bringing in First Round Capital and Lowercase Capital, who join previous investors Mitch Kapor and Polaris Venture Partners.

Microsoft takes on bar codes with Tag, links the web to the real world

You may not know what a QR code is exactly, but you’ve probably seen one on a poster, magazine ad, or some other printed material. Cellphone users can simply take a picture of the black and white code, have it decoded by an application, and get redirected to a website that offers more information about whatever the code was attached to. For example, Google recently adopted QR codes as a way for customers to get more information about an establishment by linking them to the venue’s Google Places page.
