As expected, Apple will once again be holding a one-day sale on Black Friday (aka the day after Thanksgiving), according to a teaser up on Apple’s web site. The interesting part is in the wording:

Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only Christmas shopping event. You’ll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas — all with free delivery.

You’ll note the inclusion of the one item that will likely top many people’s shopping lists if it gets discounted: The iPhone.

There have been rumors floating around that Apple could discount the iPhone for its one-day sale. Of course, with that wording it’s possible (and maybe even probable) that Apple is referring to iPhone accessories as the “gift ideas” and not the device itself. But it no doubt will be discounting the other two items mentioned: The iPod and Mac computers, and an iPhone is included in the “1” image — so maybe there is something there…

Of course — and I hate to dampen everyone’s holiday spirits — Apple still doesn’t technically sell the iPhone online, and this teaser is for an Apple Online Store sale. Not to mention that this promotion is only up on the New Zealand Apple Store currently, as MacRumors notes — but it will undoubtedly be up for other parts of the world as well soon.

Whether Apple actually does discount the device or not, it would probably be prudent to wait until Friday to buy one (if you are planning on getting one this holiday season), just to make sure.
