Local news and discussion site Outside.in has raised an undisclosed amount of new funding from existing investors. Let’s hope the New York startup has enough money now to keep the going during a tough time for many media and news organizations.

Local search sites like Judy’s Book have failed, but it looks like Outside.in co-founder John Geraci may have been right when he told us the competition just launched too early; Outside.in says traffic grew 400 percent between January and November of this year. It’s a new site, so you’d hope to see substantial growth, but that’s still an encouraging sign.

We’ve already written about being impressed by Radar, a service from Outside.in that sorts news based on distance and relevance to the user. More recently, the company released the GeoToolkit, which allows publishers to arrange their content based on geography. Partners include the Boston Herald and the Sacramento Bee.

Union Square Ventures, the New York City Investment Fund , Betaworks and Milestone Venture Partners all participated in the recent financing. Outside.in last raised $3 million in May.
