Almost exactly a year ago, the Hollywood trade magazine Variety launched a social network, The Biz. Today, it’s announcing it will close down the network next week, on March 2. The reason? In tough times, Variety apparently thinks it’s more important to focus on job listings than social networking.
The Biz is being replaced by VarietyMediaCareers.com, a new job-specific site. I say “job-specific” because jobs were an element of The Biz (it was created with Jobster after all), but now that will be the entire focus.
In an email to users, Variety writes:
Dear Biz User,
After months of research and creative design, is closing its doors to make room for Variety’s new and improved industry jobsite. The site will focus less on social networking, and more on the job market, uniting recruiters and candidates within the world of entertainment and media.
From March 2nd the Biz will no longer be available and you will be automatically directed to www.VarietyMediaCareers.com, where you’ll be able to search for the biggest and best jobs across the entertainment and media sectors. Why not bookmark the url now? Your login will remain the same, however you will be emailed a new, temporary password, which you’ll have the option to change once you are successfully logged in.
