I’m at work. I haven’t played that game in 8 or 9 hours, and I still can’t get that out of my head. Pata-pata-pata-pon! Pon-pon-pata-pon! It’s just so addicting. There’s something about the rhythm of the game that just gets into your head and doesn’t let go. When you get into the groove and find yourself hitting the drums perfectly, switching between defense, offense and movement without a mistake, it’s awesome.
Patapon 2 sucks me in with the visuals first, but it’s the clever mix of side-scrolling fighting and rhythm that really hook me. It’s frustrating to miss, but it’s sublime to get it right over and over again, watching as you increase your power and enter into a fever. It’s been awhile since a game so expertly sucked me in with such a simple on the surface mechanic. I could happily play 30 or 40 hours of this and still not get bored of it. And for 20 bucks as a download? It’s a no brainer. It’s also a reason to be thankful for the PSP.
