Touch Tuesday is a improperly named column where I pick a app from the iTunes App Store(game or other) and see if it’s worth your time. This week I pick Tap Tap Revenge 2.
I love the iTunes App Store because it’s like a giant bin full of free apps that are just begging to to be tested and played. Yes, a lot of it is crap or completely useless, but sometimes, you come across an App that is a true gem. The original Tap Tap Revenge was one of these, and now it’s sequel, Tap Tap Revenge 2, elevates this to a whole new level.
Tap Tap Revenge 2, or TTR2, is a music rhythm game in the vein of Guitar Hero and Beatmania. Three lanes run from the top to the bottom of the game screen, in which colored orbs run down to the bottom. You have to tap the orbs as they cross the bottom in time to the melody of the song. Occasionally, you’ll get a arrow which indicates which direction to shake the phone. After tapping enough orbs to build your multiplier, you’ll get a sort of Star Power ability, called Revenge, which can be activated by shaking the phone. This doubles your multiplier, so you can go for the high score.
The game’s presentation is spot on and a joy to look at. As you build your streak, the background will intensify and become morepsychedelic. Activate Revenge Mode, and the game becomes the end scene to 2001: A Space Odyssey, a total acid trip. It works and makes you feel like you’re really doing well or poorly if your screen still looks bland to the eye.
Developer Tapulous could have packaged a few songs into the game and let it be, but what elevates this free app to almost god-like status is all the features. The game sports the option to download songs that are released weekly. As of now, there are over 130 songs to play, including tracks from mainstream bands such as Death Cab for Cutie and Senses Fail, and indie bands like The Kaiser Chiefs and The Mother Hips, playable on one of the games four difficulties. You can play online against other players, chat with them in chat rooms, or check your stats that are linked to your online TTR profile. That’s not enough? The game sports achievements as well that are placed on your profile.
TTR2 is probably the best value you will receive in an App, bar none. If you just got a shiny iPhone 3G S, or are looking for something new to play, Tap Tap Revenge 2 is a great game to have.
