As everyone recounts his favorite moments from the past decade, one thing is continually overlooked.  As long as video games have been under construction, developers have been touting their brand new technology and engines. These tend to come in cycles, and I thought I would share my favorite, water.

For a solid year, it seemed like every developer had their own new engine which could make water so real you’d get thirsty looking at it.  We saw it in puddles. We saw it in rain. We even saw it in heartfelt tears glistening down a meticulously modeled cheek. While the demos never got as bizarre as the infamous meat cube, they were ubiquitous.

However, this could be said of most technologies. One thing made me fond of this fad more than others; it was going to make me rich. I had come up with the ultimate game to show off these developments. I was going to make NCAA Swimming! As a swimmer myself, this was the perfect opportunity to make my sport popular with the general public. For once, I could say I swam without someone mentioning Michael Phelps! Developers would leap at the chance to make my new game and show off their new systems. Meanwhile, I would stop swimming in water all together, having grown fond of my newly acquired money baths.

Sadly, water was quickly overshadowed by the next big thing, leaving me high and dry.
