Back in the good old days of Facebook (think 2004), you used to be able to click on people’s profile interests and easily pull up a list of all friends who were into the same things like bands or TV shows. That changed as the site’s search evolved and as the company launched more marketer-friendly Fan Pages.
Today it looks like some of that functionality may be coming back with new Community Pages that are very search engine-friendly and have wiki-style editing. They’re different from traditional Fan Pages in that anyone can add to the content.
“Community Pages are a new type of Facebook Page dedicated to a topic or experience that is owned collectively by the community connected to it. Just like official Pages for businesses, organizations and public figures, Community Pages let you connect with others who share similar interests and experiences.”
It turns out that three times as many Facebook users choose to fan pages instead of listing topics as interests on their profile, according to the company. So it has adapted by turning profile interests into links to Pages. That could help people connect with friends who are into the same interests. (Fan Pages usually show you which friends also like the Page.)
The next time you log in and check out your profile page on Facebook, a box will recommend pages based on interests you’ve shared. If you want to add more interests to your profile, you can “Like” more pages. (As reported before, the term “Liking” is replacing “Become a Fan”). Users can remove Pages from their profiles at any time and they feature certain ones over others. The company has also retooled its privacy settings to adjust what others can see, including friend lists.
