Clustrix, an alum of Silicon Valley incubator Y Combinator’s 2006 class, finally launched today with a database tool, called the Clustered Database System, capable of scaling to a massive amount of entries — something that should greatly benefit e-commerce, social networking and data sharing sites, among others.
Previously, these companies would have to pour time and resources into custom coding large databases. Clustrix’s new offering should save them both time and money. It is configured as an appliance, which the company plans to sell for thousands of dollars.
Several other services popped up to jump this hurdle in the past, as GigaOm points out. This roster includes Hadoop, Cassandra, Schooner and Northscale.
Based in San Francisco, the company has raised $18 million from Sequoia Capital, ATA Ventures and U.S. Venture Partners.
