The past few weeks have been good to Stanford student Feross Aboukhadijeh (pictured right with YouTube CEO Chad Hurley), who created the YouTube Instant site earlier this month and was then famously offered a job at YouTube. Aboukhadijeh announced on his blog today that he will accept the YouTube job offer while continuing his studies at Stanford, and he also revealed some interesting statistics and new features for his site.
Aboukhadijeh says that YouTube Instant hit 10 million users in 10 days, and it received 28,000 Facebook Likes, 20,000 tweets, and 14,000 Stumbles (from link sharing service StumbleUpon). Needless to say, YouTube Instant has been a smashing success for the student. Aboukhadijeh also revealed that he’s currently interning at Facebook, and he will finish his commitment there before starting at YouTube.
Aboukhadijeh created YouTube Instant as a response to the unveiling of Google Instant, which allows users to receive Google search results instantly, and without even hitting any search buttons. YouTube Instant brings the same real-time search capabilities to YouTube — as a user types a search query, the site guesses the video and automatically begins playing it.
With the announcement that he’s accepting the YouTube job, Aboukhadijeh also announced some new features for his site. He’s added video playback controls, autoplay (which automatically starts a video once one has finished), keyboard controls, and shortened shareable URLs. He also writes that he’s working on “adding awesome Facebook integration, on-the-fly playlist creation, and custom ajax-updating AdSense units.”
Aboukhadijeh was interviewed about YouTube Instant by NBC San Diego. You can watch the interview below:
