Sorry Palm Pre and Pixi fans, it looks like you’ll be left out in the cold when it comes to the upcoming Web OS 2.0 update, Engadget confirmed today in a conversation with HP’s (and former Palm CEO) Jon Rubinstein.
Owners of the faster Pre Plus and Pixi Plus phones also won’t be able to upgrade to the new OS. According to Rubinstein, the older devices just didn’t have the power to run Web OS 2.0. That leaves Palm’s upcoming Pre 2, which is available for preorder now on Verizon, and its future phones — the Veer and Pre 3 announced today — as the only phones running Palm’s new OS.
The news doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. It’s original Pre and Pixi are dated by this point, and the Plus variants basically just added more RAM to improve multitasking performance. If Palm is to finally realize the full potential of WebOS with its new phones and TouchPad tablet, then it will have to leave its older devices behind. Web OS 2.0 will offer better multitasking capabilities, as well as an upgrade to Palm’s Synergy technology, which unifies email and social networks into a single interface.
Loyal Palm users will be rewarded somehow though. Rubinstein said that HP would offer “something special” to owners of the older devices.
Rubinstein also admitted that Palm missed an entire product cycle due to its money troubles and subsequent purchase by HP. That’s likely why we only saw the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus devices early last year, when Palm should have had more significantly upgraded phones available. The company finally unveiled the Pre 2, it’s next flagship device, in October — but it’s clear that it came way too late. Now Pre 2 sales will likely suffer even more while Palm fans hold out for the release of the Pre 3 this summer.
