Today presents aÂ cornucopiaÂ of gaming pleasure for Assassinâs Creed fans. Publisher Ubisoft is not only releasing Assassinâs Creed III for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 today, but Sonyâs newest portable system, the PlayStation Vita, is also getting a new entry in the series all to itself.
Assassinâs Creed III: Liberation tells the story of Aveline, a female assassin operating mostly in New Orleans from 1765 to 1780. But is her story worth telling? Can Liberation measure up to the seriesâ standards, or does this portable adventure feel as small as the screen you play it on?

Itâs portable Assassinâs Creed
The basics of the series are all here. Youâll still be scaling large towers (or trees), jumping from roof to roof, stabbing unsuspecting guards in the back, and countering every strike of the enemyâs sword. If you haven’t played an Assassin’s Creed game before, that’s basically what you do. Oh, and of course you assassinate people. It’s all here. Youâre just doing it all on a smaller screen.
While Liberation canât graphically match the console installments of the franchise, itâs still impressive to see how much of the experience developer Ubisoft Sofia is able to transfer to the Vita. Quality voice acting accompanies every word ofÂ dialogue, and the main locations, the city of New Orleans, and the swampy bayou are fun to explore and jump around in. These new settings immerse the player inÂ environments entirely unlike what weâve seen from Assassin’s Creed before.
Liberation introduces the first female hero in the series, Aveline. This half-French, half-African-American assassin is aÂ legitimateÂ badass, showing as much skill at stealth and assassination as her male predecessors, Altair and Ezio. She alsoâs not afraid to use herÂ feminineÂ charms to manipulate her targets.
Aveline has a strong sense of morality, notably shown through numerous attempts to help escaped slaves, and sheâs not one to blindly follow orders or to kill when itâs unnecessary. Seeing such a strong female lead in gaming is refreshing, especially one in a title that rarely exploits her sexuality.
What you won’t like
I hated my first few hours with Liberation. Many of the initial missions task you with mindlessly walking from one checkpoint to another, occasionally triggering a short cutscene. âWalk to the docks and talk to that guy, then walk back to your warehouse.â Thrilling.
This wouldnât be so bad if you could get from point A to point B with the saga’s trademark rooftop scaling, which lets you run, jump, and climb through theÂ environmentÂ just by holding down a single button while moving. But many of these early trials take away your abilities to sprint and ascend. You see, Aveline has multiple personas she can change into, each with slightly different skills and notorieties (the higher your notoriety, the moreÂ aggressiveÂ guards become).
Thatâs a cool idea in theory, but some missions force you into a specific costume. Often, this will be the lady persona, which requires Aveline to wear formal and proper attire that leaves her slow and grounded. This effectively turns Liberation into a walking simulator, which is as enjoyable as it sounds. You can still stab people, but it isnât as much funÂ when you have to slowly waddle toward your target. I prefer plunging down at hostiles from a rooftop.
Thankfully, I think even the developers realized how boring the lady persona is. Sheâs slowly phased out of the game, and missionsÂ simultaneouslyÂ get more interesting.
Bugs in the bog
A few ugly bugs marred my murderous adventures, the most annoying being a bizarreÂ camera error. After a cutscene, the frame would violently shake every couple of seconds. This went on for a good 20 minutes. Thankfully, another cinematic fixed the camera before I decorated my Vita with my last lunch.
The New Orleans crowds suffer a few problems, most notably random disappearances. Sometimes youâll see a citizen chaotically change forms, shapeshifting through multiple character models.
I also suffered one game-crashing bug, and at one point the sound cut out entirely for a few seconds. These problems pop up frequently enough to make the experience feel cheaper than what youâre used to from Assassin’s Creed releases.
Lame Vita gimmicks
Did you hear!? The Vita has a touchscreen! Two of them! And gyroscope controls! And a camera! Donât worry, if you ever forget about the Vitaâs numerous features, Liberation will happily remind you through a series of lame gimmicks and minigames.
I groaned when I had to open a letter by swiping my fingers on the top of the front and back touchscreens. I just laughed when I did it for the fifth time. DuringÂ canoeingÂ sequences, you can row your boat either by pressing a button or by swiping down on the back of the system. Guess which option I chose.
A lot of these gimmicks are downright broken. On certain occasions, you have to hold your Vita up to a bright light to reveal a secret map. I placed my system over a shining light bulb to no avail, but somehow pointing the screen toward the floor worked. One minigame involved tilting the Vita to move a little ball around a maze, but I had no idea where the center of gravity was. I just haphazardly overcompensated until the stupid ball went into the stupid hole.
My âfavoriteâ wasÂ the out-of-nowhere touchscreen dancing minigame. You really just have to laugh.
Just not enough
So much is missing from Liberation that you would expect from a real Assassinâs Creed game. Simple organic interactions with crowds, like beggars pestering you for money or encountering anÂ oppressedÂ citizen in need of rescue, are gone. The city of New Orleans, while nicely detailed, canât compare to the scope of Constantinople from Assassinâs Creed: Revelations or Rome from Assassinâs Creed: Brotherhood. Liberation’s Big Easy just doesnât feel alive like those cities do.
This is also a far shorter adventure than the ones presented by its console predecessors, with few side quests around to help pad the experience. I’m OK with a short game if it’s properly paced, but Liberation often feels like entire chunks just went missing. One time, a cutscene ended, and I suddenly had to fight anÂ alligatorÂ for no reason. It felt like someone just forgot to put in aÂ transition.
The actual story also feels like its lacking something, with no real consistent plot or villain to tie the decade-spanning adventure together. Additionally, you don’t get to play as Desmond, aÂ reoccurringÂ character in the series whose modern-day exploits usually help bridge the franchise’s entries together. His scenes also used to offer a nice break from the historical scenarios.
Typically in an Assassin’s Creed game, Templars or Assassins (two ancient groups constantly warring with each other) use a mind-reading machine on Desmond, so he can relive experiences from his ancestors. However, Aveline is not related to Desmond, so I understand why he’s not around for Liberation. But Ubisoft Sofia should have realized that it needed something to help tie this game together with previous installments. And I mean more than a lame cameo from Assassin’s Creed III’s hero, Connor.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with the series, you’ll have a hard time shaking the feeling that you’re playing an incomplete game. Just because the experience is on a smaller system doesn’t mean that the actual scope should feelÂ smaller as well. Uncharted: Golden Abyss, another Vita game spun off from a popular console counterpart, is essentially another Uncharted game.Â Liberation is not just another Assassin’s Creed game. It’s less than that.
The core of the Assassinâs Creed experience is here, but thatâs the problem. Itâs just the core. Liberation is missing too many of the essential series ingredients, resulting in a game that’s often more annoying than fun to play.
But you will find moments in Liberation where the Assassinâs Creed flavor tastes as strong as you could hope for, like when youâre running through the trees of the bayou or silently taking down a fortâs defenses. Sadly, the game is quick to water these moments down with a lame quest, silly touchscreen minigame, or some distracting bug.
Liberation feels like an unimportant side story in a far moreÂ ambitiousÂ tale, one that you donât really need to hear. If you’ve never played an Assassin’s Creed game before, then this is a terrible place to start.
