Minecraft Pi

Before our sun collapses and goes supernova, Minecraft developer Mojang will probably release its brick-building games on all available platforms — and then some that aren’t available, like toasters and cats.

Today, the company officially released Minecraft: Pi Edition for the popular credit-card-sized Raspberry Pi Linux-based PC, according to Mojang’s blog. The download is free and available now at

Mojang based this new version of the game on the work it did for the Pocket Edition releases on iOS and Android.

Of course, Raspberry Pi’s creators designed it to help teach people about computing and programming. With that in mind, Mojang made Pi Edition fully crackable so rookies could open up and experiment with the code.

“The possibilities are massive,” Mojang chief word officer Owen Hill wrote in a blog. “You could organize the cheapest LAN party of all time or use the Pi to learn the fundamentals of programming on a minuscule budget. It’s like hacking your way into Minecraft and modifying the game world with code, a bit like being [Minecraft developers] Notch, Jeb, or Nathan, but arguably more fun and less stressful.”

Raspberry Pi is available online starting at around $35.
