The Tabby Awards, the global competition for the best tablet apps, just announced the finalists in its 2014 consumer app competition. More than 200 iPad and Android tablet apps from publishers in 20 countries entered the competition earlier this year.

An international judging panel of independent app professionals, completed by officials from the Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA), reviewed these apps over the past few weeks and rated them across a range of criteria. The selection process, supervised by Christopher Cunningham, tech director of the Huge agency in New York acting as the judging chair, resulted in a short list of 92 finalists.

These finalists are grouped in 8 categories for Android apps and games and 22 categories for iPad apps and iPad games.

Finalist publishers include well-known names such as CBS, Disney, Electronic Arts, Flipboard, Haiku Deck, Morningstar, National Geographic Magazine, Nickelodeon, Prezi, Ravensburger, Rosetta Stone, The Huffington Post, and USA Today, as well as many smaller innovative mobile publishers. Fifteen countries from three continents are represented among these finalists.

The judges will now proceed with a final round and select the very best tablet app in each category as a Tabby Award Winner.

Introducing the Tabby Awards Users’ Choice

In parallel to the judges’ assessment, tablet users will have their say. For the first time, consumers will be able to vote in each category for their favorite app among the finalists. All Android and iPad tablet users are invited to vote for the Tabby Awards Users’ Choice among Android apps and games, iPad apps, and iPad games at from now until July 25. (Consumers can try the finalist apps by downloading them from an app store link before casting their vote.)

Upcoming competition for business apps

While the selection process is ongoing in the consumer app competition, the Tabby Awards will soon launch its second 2014 competition, this time with a focus on business apps. Publishers eager to have their app recognized as one of the best tablet apps for businesses will be welcome to enter the Tabby Awards Business competition in a few weeks.
