New Havok effects tech targets next-gen consoles.
Game development technology software company Havok announced its new visual effects product, Havok FX, today. The technology makes visual effects such as particle, dust, shrapnel, and smoke more CPU-friendly and less intensive in 3D game worlds, and it’s designed to run on the main processor rather than graphical chips. The package fully cross-platform the is aimed at current generation game platforms like Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. This lets Havok, which already works with most major publishers and has supported over 600 titles, further serve its partners.
Brian Waddle, Havok VP of sales and marketing, says that the technology takes advantage of the step up from the previous consoles, offering an efficient, lightweight solution to high-end effects. With it, dynamic and persistent particle effects will interact with both the player and the environment, giving developers more freedom enrich game worlds and environments.
Ubisoft’s upcoming team shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is one the first games to support the technology when it ships in October on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Waddle called the game a perfect opportunity to display the company’s new technology, saying that it showcases the future of particle physics on CPU.
