Correction: The latest version of the Golden Tee arcade product can update content, world leaderboards, and run special events without the need of operator intervention.

Western arcade route operators aren’t going to be happy with Golden Tee developer Incredible Technologies.

Happy Time Games has announced that it’s taking the long-running arcade golf series and turning it into a mobile game with Golden Tee Mobile.

Why is this bad news for arcade operators? Because the Golden Tee series has been a steady quarter generator for the industry since the late ’90s (including a 2015 update). These last couple of decades haven’t exactly been a boon time for the Western arcade industry, which is in an uphill battle against other entertainment mediums and platforms. So it’s not exactly great news that a popular series moving to mobile devices.

One of the few things keeping the coin-op version of Golden Tee appealing was its ability to run local and world leaderboards, special events, and updated content. Now, with it on mobile devices, Happy Time Games can provide these same services quickly.

If Golden Tee Mobile is successful, the only thing the arcade version will have going for it is the trackball control. Is that feature going to be enough to keep dropping quarters into a cabinet version of the game? We’ll see when Golden Tee Mobile tee’s off on Android and iOS enabled devices this fall.
