SAN FRANCISCO — GoPro has introduced a new program aimed at helping promote social causes in order to engage and inspire people to participate. Called GoPro for a Cause, the company will be providing technical, production, marketing, and financial support to organizations that help the world.
On stage at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, GoPro chief executive Nick Woodman revealed the initiative. Ten organizations will be the initial recipients of the company’s support, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Mauli Ola, and Bicycles Against Poverty.
“Since the beginning, we had a vision to leverage [our product] as a platform of positivity and to do good in the world,” said Woodman. “It’s steeped in sharing positive experiences, and we want to have the world go out and live more fulfilled lives. The same type of content approach that has made the brand more popular can help make social causes more well known.”
Other conversations that took place on stage include whether Woodman would be interested in working at an office in Cupertino, California. “I’m very happy working in San Mateo,” he said, seemingly shutting down any rumors that suggested Apple is interested in the company. “I don’t think that Apple is investing or exploring GoPro-like devices.”
And as for that drone that GoPro is working on: It’s coming in 2016.
