Publisher Activision Blizzard revealed today that it has more than 15 million people playing its Overwatch shooter across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The beloved team-based action game debuted in April, and it has quickly established itself as one of the most popular releases in the $99.6 billion gaming market.
Overwatch is also one of the driving forces behind Activision’s fast-growing digital business. While the game is available at retail as a physical disc for all of its supported platforms, it generates significant revenue from its digital full-game and add-on sales. In a press release regarding Activision’s fiscal Q2, Bobby Kotick specifically credits the Blizzard shooter for helping the company find new sources of revenue.
“With Overwatch’s incredibly successful launch, Call of Duty’s record first half performance, and Candy Crush’s continued growth as key drivers of our overall performance, we delivered a record Q2,” Kotick said. “The lynchpin of our current success and our future growth is our talent. Our teams have the unique combination of passion, entrepreneurial spirit and inspired creativity. The success of Overwatch, our newest franchise, is a testament to this talent. I’m grateful to our over 10,000 employees, each of whom embodies these characteristics of our culture.”
Overwatch will likely continue to grow as Blizzard plans to support it with esports events, special in-game promotions, and more. It is already the fastest-selling PC game ever in China, and it is the most played game in Korea’s internet cafes. Activision Blizzard will do what it can to maintain and stoke that momentum.
