Stefan Birrer

Stefan Birrer, PhD, is the Co-Founder and CEO of real-time streaming platform Phenix. With over two decades of industry experience, Stefan is a touted expert in P2P and real-time video. Stefan came to the U.S. from Switzerland on a scholarship program to Northwestern University after being scouted out as a young engineering talent. At Northwestern, Stefan met Fabián Bustamante, a lead scientist at the university, where they then began extensive research into peer-to-peer networking videos. Stefan went on to receive his Masters and a PhD in Computer Science. Stefan became and advisor for Silicon Valley companies, including Skype and Google, and has developed the backend for two real-time streaming platforms, including Rabbit. In 2013, Stefan recognized that the future of real-time streaming required a new type of platform that provides video content that is low latency and interactive. That same year, Stefan launched Phenix to address this market need, building the technology from the ground-up to provide a true real-time experience that is high-quality, low-latency and supports massive scale.
