Despite the stunningly un-original name “Planet of the Apps,” Apple has launched an open casting call for the new reality show it threatened to make earlier this year.

The company has created a website where you can make a submission if you want to participate. Apple has teamed up with Propagate, a new production company created by the guy behind “The Biggest Loser.” “The Biggest Loser.” “The Biggest Loser.”

The description of the show says: “Join us on the search for the next great app in a new original series. Those selected will have the chance to receive hands-on guidance from some of the most influential experts in the tech community, featured placement on the App Store, and funding from top-tier VCs.”

The companies predict that people will want to watch this. I have my doubts.

Part of the deal, which should be obvious, is that the app must be in development and work on iOS, macOS, tvOS, or watchOS. As part of the submission, applicants can make a one-minute video. Tip from Apple: Don’t wear hats or sunglasses, yo.

The winners potentially get mentorship from tech and entertainment “experts” and featured placement in the Apple App Store, and those chosen for the final round will get to “meet with top-tier VCs investing up to $10m over the course of the season.”

Now, whether that $10 million is money invested in participants or an estimate of how much they will invest in general during the given time period is…vague.

The show will shoot in Los Angeles and is aiming for release in 2017.

Now, it will be interesting to see if use of the name perturbs the boutique game studio Planet of the Apps. Or maybe it will get people to revisit a 2009 CNBC series called Planet of the Apps.

But we’re sure that whatever happens, it will cast a warm, fuzzy spotlight that will make Silicon Valley developers even more beloved around the world than they already are.
