ARM launched a new Mali-based low-power processor that is capable of running a 4K video display.

That is an interesting accomplishment because it takes a lot of performance to drive 4K displays, which account for about 20 percent of all TVs sold now. At the same time, ARM chips are known for their power efficiency, so you can likely run that display without consuming a ton of power.

In launching the ARM Mali-DP650, ARM is taking on rivals such as Imagination Technologies, which makes MIPS-based chips that have targeted TVs and consumer electronics. Cambridge, England-based ARM said its chip can handle 4K resolutions at 60 frames per second.

ARM said the processor will be aimed at both mobile devices and smart 4K TVs. The chip supports a wide array of display resolutions, including 3840 x 2160 (4K).

“The Mali-DP650 display processor will enable mobile screens with multiple composition layers, for graphics and video, at Full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolutions and beyond while maintaining excellent picture quality and extending battery life,” said Mark Dickinson, general manager, media processing group, ARM, in a statement. “Smartphones and tablets are increasingly becoming content passports, allowing people to securely download content once and carry it to view on whichever screen is most suitable. The ability to stream the best quality content from a mobile device to any screen is an important capability ARM Mali display technology delivers.”
