A Canadian company Group IV Semiconductor, whose backers include Silicon Valley venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, the Canadian government and others, has raised $9.1 million (Canadian dollars) to develop a better light bulb.

Ottawa-based Group IV Semiconductor Inc. announced yesterday a three-year, $9.1 million initiative aimed at developing solid state lighting products made of silicon that use 90 per cent less energy than a traditional incandescent light bulb and last up to 50 times longer.
