Moblyng, a mobile social media company, launched a new mobile entertainment site today, as well as a new feature for artists on MySpace to connect to fans on mobile phones. Moblyng translates Flash videos, play lists, and slide shows found on sites like MySpace or YouTube for mobile phones.
The new mobile website, found at m.moblyng.com, is a entertainment destination for mobile phones. Cell phone users can find videos of artists like The Pussycat Dolls, slide shows of pinups like Eva Mendes, or trailers for The Dark Knight. The company is also adding a feature for musicians’ MySpace profiles to help fans get artists’ content onto their phones. For example, fans of The Crystal Method can enter the phone number into a widget found on the group’s MySpace page, and Moblyng will send videos, slide shows, and play lists that their phone can play. The company already offers the ability to send pictures, which it dubs “BlyngPix,” to other mobile users. Users can also send virtual gifts to each other’s phones.
The company was started as slideshow creation tool Fliptrack, but rebooted as Moblyng this May, focused on scraping Flash apps off the web for mobile users to view and use.
I spent a bit of time messing around on the site. My 3G Nokia 6555, with its dinky WAP 2.0 browser, choked on everything I tried to send its way, but fellow VentureBeat writer MG Siegler, with his 3G iPhone, was able to see the slideshow I created at the site. The full list of supported phones can be found on the site and includes many low-end, non-smartphones.
The company is headquartered in Redwood City, CA. It received $5.7 million in funding from Mohr Davidow Ventures and Deep Fork Capital.
