Shyp, a service that sends a friendly guy or gal to your house to take care of your shipping needs, just raised $9.2 million in new funding, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company says it has a total of $10 million in commitments.
The startup, which officially launched in San Francisco in late March, lets people who need to ship something simply request a “Shyp hero” (read: friendly person that will do the errand for you) to come pick up their items for a small $5 fee. Shyp then takes care of packing and shipping the items, and bills the customer. Customers can also track their items through the app. It’s currently available only in San Francisco, where the company is based.
While few details are available in the SEC document, it does state that it is a recent round (the first sale occurred on July 11) and that the company seeks to raise an additional $700,000.
This is Shyp’s first round of funding since raising its $2.1 million seed round in September from Homebrew, Sherpa Ventures, and a host of others. Sherpa Ventures led this round, with Homebrew and unnamed investors also participating. Scott Stanford from Sherpa Ventures will be joining Shyp’s board of directors.
The company plans to use the new funding to expand outside of San Francisco, starting first with New York City, as well as to continue building its team.
Shyp says it has fulfilled more than 15,000 shipments since its launch in March.
Shyp was founded in 2013 by Joshua Scott, and Kevin Gibbon, although Jack Smith was previously involved as a cofounder (and still claims so in his Twitter bio).
