Palo Alto’s StemCells won federal approval for the first time Thursday to transplant fetal stem cells into human brains, to correct a fatal disorder in children. StemCells is working researchers at Stanford University. The stem cells to be transplanted aren’t from human embryos, which are subject to federal research restrictions. Instead, the cells are later-stage fetal neural cells that are destined to turn into the mature cells that make up a fully formed brain.
