Guilty Gear Xrd

Killer Instinct Xbox One

The dawning of a new era in gaming is near. Like, “two months later and here we are” near.

Sony’s coming out of the gate with the PS4, while Microsoft’s Xbox One is the company console being prepped for war. Gamers are excited, of course. Slipping into the comments section for any videos promoting this system will lead you to the heated conversations of console fanboys. Then there’s the gamers who just love both consoles equally and just want to enjoy the new experiences they’ll bring.

Experiences like PS4’s Killzone: Shadow FallKnack and Driveclub. Experiences like Xbox One’s Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome. I’ve watched countless trailers for these exclusive games, plus I’ve kept an eye on the list of multiplatform launch games hitting both machines. But I can’t shake the overwhelming feeling of “Meh…” when I see what both consoles have to offer, gaming wise. The launch lineup leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. The PS4’s going to hit store shelves and let me play…another FPS that’s never appealed to me, a platformer I’ll probably play for a month and trade in afterwards and a racer that doesn’t appeal to the non-simulation racing fan in me.

I’m more prone to throwing a few hundreds at the Xbox One upon launch? Why? One reason and one reason only – Killer Instinct. I told everyone I knew via social media that the announcement of that game would get me to cop an Xbox One. Imagine my reaction at the first trailer that debuted at E3 2013. Mind…blown. Fighting games are my lifeblood, folks. I check EventHubs and Shoryuken daily. I find myself counting the frame counts for moves during a live-streamed match. I look forward to a weekend of watching EVO tournament streams. My day is all the more better if I go undefeated in Persona 4 Arena online. And my day becomes grim if I can’t get one win in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate. It’s easy to see why I’m willing to spend some more dough on a next-gen console for a fighting game. What’s odd to some of my gaming associates is the fact that I only want a next-gen console for their fighting games.

Persona 4 Arena

It’s well known that a console’s launch is littered with 3 or 4 good games, then spread out with underwhelming sequels/ports of past-gen games. I have no interest in playing a dozen or so Activision or Ubisoft titles that didn’t do anything for me on the PS3/Xbox 360. Nor do I want to play a collection of 1st-party titles for both consoles that just don’t appeal to me. Killer Instinct is the lone exception to that rule. And from the looks of things, I’ll have a PS4 in my possession once Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- releases. I feel like I’m the odd man out in this case. I just want to beat up a few buddies and enjoy the fruits of my next-gen gaming labor. My heart skips a beat when I see new vid of Jago uppercutting Chief Thunder or when the latest beautiful trailer for Guilty Gear Xrd assaults my senses. My non-reactive…well, reaction to trailers for games like Infamous: Second Son or Titanfall seems strange to some. “HOW CAN YOU NOT GET EXCITED FOR THESE GAMES?”

I’ve been asking myself that a lot lately. I seem to elicit true feelings of enjoyment when I play a brand new fighting game, especially one that’s out for a newly released console. I guess I’m trying to relive the sacred moment of my gaming memories – purchasing a Dreamcast and playing Soul Calibur for the 1st time.

Soul Calibur

Looking at the launch titles and what’s on the horizon for the PS4 and Xbox One shows me a list of games that I have a hard time getting hyped about. Yeah, I do feel a bit differently about Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV. But we all know those games aren’t coming out for a loooooooooooooong time. I’m not excited for more FPS’s in an overcrowded market. I’m not excited for ports that will probably play the same and look slightly better on next-gen consoles. What I am hyped for are new fighting games that will look even grander and play even better than I ever imagined.

Why am I getting an Xbox One and a PS4, eventually? Because I want Killer Instinct and Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-.

Those videos above should offer even more of an explanation for my stance.

Next-Gen Consoles + New Fighting Games = Me Being Satisfied.
