Gigabyte hardware

When you think of gaming PC, all that comes to mind is a huge monster box containing all the powerful hardware. A hell of a heat sink and cooling system, a huge graphic card or two, a huge power supply to heat up all the other components and all in all a huge case to hold the huge components! That has been the set image of a gaming PC for a few years now and Gigabyte comes in with a hope to change that.

A recent announcement by Gigabyte introduces a very small gaming PC kit. It is just 59.6 x 128 x 115.4 mm box. Now a PC that small would naturally make people think whether it really is a “gaming PC” because it does not fit in the size defined by the norm. You have to be aware that technology shrinks every year and this ultra compact box packs in just as much punch required to power up latest games.

Let us get into the specifications of this box. It contains one Intel Core i5-4200H processor running at a clock speed of 2.8GHz and goes up to 3.4GHz on turbo boost. Two SO-DIMM DDR3L slots can handle up to 16GB of RAM and a mSATA port to add in your SSD and a SATA port for regular 2.5 inch HDD. If you want to add in some more components, there is the half-size PCIe slot that gets used up with 802.11ac Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 combo card. The BRIX mini gaming PC would be useless if there is no graphic process in there, so to make it useful they have added Nvidia GeForce 760 graphics.

It would be interesting to know what kind of display resolution this can support, because that is where you will understand how powerful this box is. BRIX can drive display resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz. That would be 3 monitors that we are talking about. There are 2 mini HDMI ports and a mini DisplayPort to drive 3 monitors. Additionally, the box has two USB 3.0 ports and the Gigabit Ethernet port. There are two USB 3.0 ports and audio jacks on the front as well.

If you feel that this box is something you might want to buy considering the small form factor but you are driven off because of the processor, then there is an Intel i7 version coming up in July. There are no additional details about rest of the specifications. BRIX is being sold online through retailers like Amazon, AVA Direct, and others.

A different version of Gigabyte BRIX comes with Intel Iris Pro graphics, which is a newer generation onboard integrated graphics and the best thing about it is it can run Battlefield 4 on acceptable frame rates at 720p HD. Additionally, it can also output 4K video without any glitches. There are several more versions of BRIX which differ on price. There is a whole range from low end models to high end gaming models. BRIX seems to be a better choice for gaming in comparison to Xbox which requires you to have those dirty xbox live gold membership codes to play online.
