Activision Publishing and Infinity Ward showed off the multiplayer combat for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered at the Call of Duty XP event, and we had a good hands-on session with the game.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare really set the tone for the blockbuster shooter franchise when it came out in 2007. Now the game has been faithfully recreated in high-definition for the newest consoles and high-end PCs. The remake from Raven Software, Modern Warfare Remastered, will debut as part of the Deluxe and Legacy versions of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on November 4. The remastered title will have the full campaign as well as 10 multiplayer maps, including Crash, Backlot, Crossfire, Overgrown, and Bog. I got a chance to play both Overgrown and Crash. They brought back nostalgic memories, even though they only came out about eight years ago. They reminded me how I liked Domination mode, where players have to control three pieces of the map.
Overgrown is a wide and open map. It has a lot of greenery and places to hide. The bad thing about the places to hide is that they also provide ways to sneak up on someone who is hiding. The map has three sections that make for good Domination points: a farm with a big barn and fields, a curved street dominated by a couple of two-story buildings, and a river that runs through the middle with bridges in two different areas.
In the Domination session, I had a basic assault rifle, so I couldn’t sit back at long range and play the role of sniper. I chose to dive into the action and capture as many points as possible. This also meant that I died a lot, which is really nothing new for me.
The Crash map also brought back a lot of memories. This one is a small, tight battlefield, with a crashed helicopter right in the middle. As a Domination map, there’s a victory point right at the center of the crash. The helicopter is in a square surrounded by tall buildings. Players can get up to the top of one of the buildings and snipe at those below. A lot of quick submachine gun action also takes place on the ground level of this map. A ton of cover exists as well, so it’s not so hard to hide from the killstreak rewards like attack helicopters. I wasn’t very good at either map on my first try, but it was still a lot of fun.
