It looks like people really do want a new massively multiplayer online experience.
The crowdfunding campaign for MMO Crowfall on Kickstarter is now one of the 20 top-funded video gaming projects in the site’s history (sitting at No. 19 right now). This game promises to revolutionize the MMO market with destructive environments and a focus on political allegiances, and it has raised $1,226,849 with seven days left until the end of its fundraising effort, easily surpassing its original goal of $800,000.
World of Warcraft and its over 10 million subscribers dominate the market. Other MMOs have a hard time competing, with many (like Elder Scrolls Online recently) dropping subscription services in an attempt to bring in more players. It’ll be interesting to see if this initial interest in Crowfall translates into a serious competitor for World of Warcraft.
That’s looking ahead a bit. As for now, Crowfall joins a list of successful game-based Kickstarter campaigns, including Mighty No. 9 ($3,845,170) and Torment: Tides of Numenera ($4,188,927), which is at the top of the list.
“Kickstarter remains the unchallenged leader when it comes to crowdfunding for games,” Crowfall developer Artcraft’s co-founder J. Todd Coleman noted in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “Crowfall’s success confirms that the right team, with the right vision, can still incite passion and gain significant momentum.”
