It might look like scruffy nerf herder now, but this game was a big deal in 1996.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is now available on GOG, a digital gaming store for PC that sells titles without DRM (digital rights management). It goes on sale just in time for May 4, which fans celebrate as Star Wars day (May the Fourth be with you). It usually costs $6, but it’s on sale for 20 percent off at $4.80.
Shadows of the Empire originally came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. It was one of the first games for the system. It monumental at the time, as most Star Wars games back then came out for PC. A PC port, which is what GOG is offering, did see release in 1997. Storywise, Shadows of the Empire takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Its gameplay and graphics might seem simple today, but it set a precedent for creating a satisfying Star Wars experience in 3D. The ship battles, including the famous Hoth level, would inspire the Rogue Squadron series.
