Xbox boss Phil Spencer on why he represented Windows 10 at E3’s PC Gaming Show

LOS ANGELES — Microsoft continues to make gestures that suggest it’ll feature more support for PC gaming going forward.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who oversees everything gaming for Microsoft and Windows, took the stage tonight during the first-ever PC Gaming Show as part of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, one of the industry’s big tradeshows. He came out to talk about how Microsoft wants to make good on its responsibility to people who prefer to play their games on a PC. And that’s the big reason he wanted to come out and make his presence known at this event.

“There have been times in our past where Microsoft has maybe lost our way with PC gaming,” said Spencer. “Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to our success.”

Spencer went on to explain that game developers were one of the reasons that Microsoft decided to make the upgrade version of Windows 10 free.

“We thought about that from a developer standpoint,” he said. “With one version of Windows, it just makes it easier.”

Spencer’s comments then turned to Microsoft games on PC. Someone in the audience even yelled to ask for Halo 5 on Windows. But the Xbox executive wanted to set expectations low.

“We will [make games for PC],” said Sepncer. “We’re dedicated to that. But I don’t like to make promises before we have a plan. I can make grandiose promises, but I’m just not that kind of person.”

Microsoft did go on to talk on how role-playing game Fable Legends, fighting game Killer Instinct, and cover-shooter Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will end up on the PC.
