I am not one to even try a tactics type of game because for me they are complicated. However, for awhile on steam there was this game nagging at me with witty humor, foolishness that should not work and an elegance many would over look. So the game I picked up is Grotesque Tactics: Bad Heroes on steam.

Not sure why this game called out to me, but than again we all have a game that just calls to us for some strange reason that gives us satisfaction. With this being my first tactics game I am keeping an open mind since I have started.

Grotesque Tactics reminds me of a parody video game since I have started. So far I have found a Mario referenece from killing a green mushroom that does "1up" noise and wording. Other call outs have been to Link and to Lord of the Rings which was also cool in my opinion. I am sure I am missing other references, but these are the ones that have stuck out the most. Well then again these were done when i was least expecting to laugh.

Battle is of course turn based that appears to be set on a large game board for each level. Of course there are enemies, pick-ups and other things to search in the area of each board. How you do this is up to you one square at a time. During your fighting I found out that doing great things is not always good as one of your characters will get depressed. This is the first game where I have seen after something good happens to you that you basically get smacked in the face with something bad that will happen to you. Taking with the good, than with the bad makes me think that as I progress I will have to evaluate what is going on the battle field. I found out that one of the bad things that happens to one of my party members he will kill teammates after his good moment.

Over all this game has been over looked, but I think this is a hidden gem for any RPG or Tactics game person. Than again with all the references it is keeping me hooked like pokemon as I have to read them all.
