Apple iTunes announcement

Update: Apple ended up announcing that it is finally adding The Beatles to iTunes. Original post below.

Apple has an unforgettable iTunes announcement planned for tomorrow morning, according to a cryptic update on the company’s website today.

Given that Apple rarely updates its home page for announcements like this, it definitely seems like something to pay attention to. The company could potentially be announcing its long-rumored cloud-based iTunes service, which could let users stream their iTunes library from any web-connected device. The cloud-based service is also a way for Apple to break out iTunes from its desktop software shackles, letting users preview and purchase music from the web instead of waiting for iTunes to load.

Rumors of a cloud-based iTunes reached new heights when Apple purchase the streaming music company Lala last December. We haven’t seen anything result from that purchase yet, so it’s very likely Apple has had the Lala folks working hard at bringing iTunes to the cloud.

The announcement coincides with the release of the iPhone operating system 4.2 update, which is scheduled to land sometime tomorrow morning as well. Even though developers have been testing iPhone OS 4.2 for some time, Apple could potentially sneak in some last-minute integration with its surprise announcement tomorrow.
